Hello. What is everyone using for creep feed if you are just going to creep a few head. When I was working for larger outfits or when I was still at home we used companies that would come and fill the feeders in bulk but right now I just have a few head of AI and embryo calves that I want to start on creep. What is working best for everyone?

Thanks

worked with a feed nutritionist to modify AAOK's feed ration for a grower ration and adjust according to what we have locally that is reasonablely cheap and substitute. Calves really like it. We taken molasses out of the show ration and just added cherry oil. they don't seem to go off feed as much with just the oil as they did with the molasses.

The only thing wrong about Precon is the price @ close to $20.00 per hundred you can feed Co-mix byproduct at just @ half the cost and the calves seem to eat it better than Precon here. All you're really wanting or needing at this time is dry matter intake and get them used to eating a feed source.

For me, Ive used precon complete to get small calves started, especially when they are in a small lot/yard close to the house.  Other creeps seem to be a little to "hot" for me.  Then I use something home mixed with a little corn when they are in a little larger pasture and don't stand all day in the creep.  I have had better luck having a local guy mix and bag what you want, cuts the lost a little...

One of the show creep rations we make is:
30% Corn
15% Oats
25% PreCon Complete
20% Purina Grand 4-T-Fyer
5% Cottonseed Hulls
5% Liquid Molasses

Thanks, dhs

I agree with several of you.  But with my own twist.  My calves don't always like a pellet or like a sweet feed.  So I mix Purina Full Range with Purina Precon.  I'll even add cotton seed hulls (what we feed in the south) as they get older.  By the time they're weaned, they are on their full "show barn" ration.  I had a first calf Angus heifer wean a 653 lb. heifer calf last year on milk and creep.  I'm going to keep doing what's working.  <cowboy>
