I have a guy that wants me to keep his show heifers and a few show bulls at my place to get them ready for shows. What would you charge for something like this? I will be feeding, providing full time care, washing, clipping, fitting, and taking these cattle to the shows. Pretty much anything that has to do with showing cattle I will be handling. Thanks in advance for any info.

I'm boarding a yearling bull for a guy right now. It's my first time doing it, but this is how I charge: $3.75/day for feed (he's not getting anything fancy, just fed with my 4-H steer). Whenever there's an expense or extra work to be done, ie picturing the bull, putting a ring in his nose, I charge for it (so like $10 to picture him, $15 to buy the ring and it in). I charged $100 to halterbreak the bull. I charge $75 (some people charge more) each time he needs to be clipped (Once for the picture, once for the show). They pay for any vaccines, ivomec, that sort of stuff. At the show I charge $100/day (that covers feed, washing, fitting, everything that I do that day) plus they pay the hotel fee. If there was more than one animal taken to the show, you'd charge more per day. One piece of advise I have is to make the owner of the animal sign a contract saying that if an animal does die or get injured while in your care, you are not responsible. This just keeps you covered in case the animal should fall over dead for no reason.

charge all the basics; feed, hay, bedding, etc. then add on what you think your time is worth, show supplies used on the animal and any other expenses such as equipment broken by that animal. Is it just me or does this topic seem to come up a lot?

I've always heard $10/day/calf which includes feed, getting rinsed, and under fans. Anything else you get reimbursed for. Show expenses should be split by head that way nobody gets stuck with an outrageous bill.

I figured my own price out before and it was 9.75 so ten bucks. also I saw thats what the bigger purebred guys were charging for sale calves. the sho expense was any where from 1000 to 1800 for the whole show for any major. Seams fair to me.
