This is my daughters first heifer to show. She is a bred and owned late April calf. I was hoping to get a few outside opinions on her good points and her bad points. She has shown twice and finished second in class first time and first in class second time. These were both smaller shows so I have no disillusion that she is a major show contender. She does have a couple of bigger shows coming up so I am trying to get some more experienced opinions on her good and bad so we can trim her to her strengths. She has good hair so that's a plus. My thought is that she is not feminine enough through her neck and shoulders. Like I said I'm not experienced with heifers at all and it's been 20 years since I showed steers. I know it's just pictures but any help is appreciated. She does move smoothly both judges commented on that.

Have been in your shoes and did the same thing.  Sought out some help to get us to a higher level.  We did learn all the hay and fill we can get into them is key to making them look deep.  Our girls are on full hay.  We feed 2-3 scoops of feed and mix a scoop of wet beet pulp in.  On show day we take 3 kinds of hay.  Green alfalfa, a mix of grass and alfalfa and some timothy.  Never know what they want on show day to eat.  She is a nice heifer and if your fitter can really clip up her neck you might like it more. You might look into a neck seat and do as part of your daily grooming routine.  Good luck and go herfs!

I think she is an excellent heifer for a first calf, and even more so if she is bred and owned. I looked over her pics before reading all of your post and I will say that what you see in her is what I see in her.  She is a big footed, smooth jointed heifer that appears to have a lot of body and dimension to her.  Biggest fault is probably that she could be longer and prettier fronted.  She appears to have the proper angle in the shoulder, just kind of massive shouldered and big necked.  As was stated by herfluvr, if you can get a necksweat and keep it on her everyday then it could help her look a little cleaner fronted.  When clipping you will want to clip that area pretty tight to minimize the size.  But I wouldnt be to overly concerned with her.  Great calf for a kid to be starting out with.  What part of Texas are you in and what shows do you plan on taking her to?

Twisted we are in north Texas just north of Dallas. Our county show is the first week ofJanuary and then we will be going to Ft. Worth. I remember using a neck sweat with my steers way back when. I know it's not likely to make that much difference in a month but with her being young it might help down the line. Thanks for the suggestion. We also have a 3/4 sister to her that's a late may. As luck would have it she has a much more feminine front end but lacks the back end power. Maybe someone knows how to combine the two then we could have a good one. The added plus for her first calf to be showing is how gentle she is.
