In your opinion, what constitutes being "honored" (if you can call it that) with the title of STEER JOCK? A trader, a big time player, just what is the infamous "Jock"?

A steer jock is someone that you can't leave your clippers laying around all by their lonesome because they will be gone when you get back!  ;D  Just kiddin...for the most part!  I think there are a bunch of different meanings to the term Steer Jock.

The honest Steer Jock-  Someone who works real hard and has steers with that look that makes you stop and say wow.  These people are often friendly and will give you a couple pointers if you ask

The Crooked Steer Jock- Someone who works real hard to change the natural appearance of their animal..and I am not talking about having great hair and knowing what to do with it.  These guys are the ones you need to watch out for.  Keep your equipment at arms length!  Typically not pleasant to be around!

The Trader Steer Jock- This guy used to be into showing steers until he got too old or his kids got too old.  He could be any of the two previously listed.

I am probably going to get slammed for putting this on here but I call it like I see it.  For the most part people gravitate toward the honest steer jock and those are my kind of people.  A lot of my friends are in that category!

One observation, one who openly calls himself a steer jock, probably isn't considered one by most people

"Steer Jocks" are kind of like "Politicians".   There are some really good ones, but they're are darn sure enough of the other kind to make you take your time forming any opinions.

Oh, by the way, I think there is another category--"Wannabe Steer Jocks".    This group may include people who have shown at at least one show, sold at least one calf that was shown at one show, or are related or close friends with one of the the other types of "Steer Jocks".  They sometimes are parents of someone who has shown at one show or maybe even have at one time or currently do live across the road from someone who owned three or more cows.  Many times these are the most vocal and opinionated of the entire group and will have strong viewpoints on a wide array of issues whether you want to hear them or not.   They may live by the motto:"I am often wrong, but I am never in doubt!!"   They are usually found standing in the gate leading to or from the showring and are totally clueless to what is actually happening around them other than they've cornered one poor soul who is polite enough to listen to them without walking away.
They're probably the second most irritating group of people around the cattle industry--right after grisled old Iowegians who post idiotic opinions on open forums.

Very well said, I was going to address the wannabees but couldn't come up with a definition to do them justice!  You definitely got the description correct!

I looked up the term steer jock in the Webster Dictionary.  This is what I found:

Main Entry: steer jock
Pronunciation: \ˈstir\  \ˈjäk\
Function: noun
Etymology: Modern American
Date: Mid 20th Century

1. An amateur who spends his money working with showsteers with regards to feeding, clipping and fitting
2. A professional who makes his living working with showsteers with regards to feeding, clipping and fitting

If in webster's dictionary that picture is under steer jock,  does length of ear enter in.

Hey Tony -- I have xcome to the conclusion that you must deffinately be related - inpart -- the an elephant clan. NOT for the afore mentioned ear size, but for the thickness of your skin -- those two yahoo's are sure throwing rocks at you left and right, and as they bounce off as much as they seem to be, you are ERALLY getting callused up to fend of the future assault!!!

Glad my name isn't Tony, although it is fairly catching!!! hehehe

A steer jock is an undergarment designed for supporting the male bovine genitalia during the performance of sports or other vigorous physical activity. A typical jockstrap consists of an elastic waistband with a support pouch for the bovine genitalia and two elastic straps affixed to the base of the pouch and to the left and right sides of the waistband at the hip. The pouch, in some varieties, may be fitted with a pocket to hold an impact resistant cup to protect the testicles and/or the penis from injury. Psychologist believe steers use these jocks to help their self esteem after suffering the shock of castration.

Dusty, I must have a more recent version of the Dictionary!  Mine had the same definition but different pictures!

I wonder too dusty if you maybe don't have an incorrect spelling or a non updated version.   That pic you you found dusty,  i am positive is the pic that was in the kansas game and parks brochure of a guy being wanted for poaching turkeys.  I remember seeing it when i was down there a couple weeks ago.
