You can use it early in place of beet pulp but I primarily use it a few weeks leading up to show at a few pounds each day.  At the show I'll increase it depending on how much fill I need and may let the steer eat as much as he wants the day of the show and water him good also to activate and increase fill capacity.

If your steer doesn't have a good appetite, depth charge is better than beet pulp because it doesn't fill up the calf as fast and it expands after the calf is done eating just as much as beet pulp.
