Had a simmy show hfr last year that didn't stick twice to the rule of thumb, breed 12 hrs after standing method. After the 3 rd  cycle we bred her at 24 hrs past standing heat and she stuck. Will this pattern generally be the case for her throughout her life? She's in heat again this evening and I assume from her last yrs history that tomorrow evening (24 hrs past) would be the best shot at her. Any input on this? Thanks in advance!

If you are not using expensive semen, I would just breed her at 12 and 24 hrs.  Losing another 21 days may cost more than the extra straw of semen is worth.

Thanks for the input znt. I'm going to use sexed hfr first and goal ($75 a straw) but I think $150 is not to extreme this day and age on a shot at a half blood hfr. I may do that!

If you do just the one insemination, I would do it at 18-24 hour vs. 12 hours.  Studies have shown very little reduction in conception rates for once/day vs. twice/day breeding.  In general, I think people tend to breed too early rather than too late.  I've been guilty of it in the past too, and I personally think my conception rates got a little better when I became more patient on when I breed.

Great info. I've had old timers tell me that you're doing more harm than good when you breed one individual more than once. I do think you are better late than early when it comes to insemination. Thanks again!
