Joys of summer
« on: June 09, 2008, 01:48:44 PM »
I know it's hot & dry some places but what do you like about summer?

to me the best things are:
hanging sheets & towels outside. love the smell of them.
strawberries- we just bought 2 quarts from the Amish & are they good!
working w/ new calves
picnics & all the good food that goes w/ them
lightning bugs
fresh garden produce
green pastures

(angel)   Knowing that my daughter is off for the summer and gets to rest her brain for a few months and just be a 'kid' is an awesome feeling for this mom!!  I also love sitting on the swing on the front porch in the evening when it 'cools" down a few degrees and just look at the cows and the horses and listen to the birds.....these are some of my favorite things about summer!!

This doesn't really apply to my apartment dweller life of present, but I miss fresh strawberries and sweetcorn for every meal in the summer. You could get a dozen ears for $1 on your way home from town. Just right up the road from our showbard. Stellar. So stellar, that my father lugged two GIANT coolers full to the Angus junior nationals last year for all to enjoy.

And, I can't forget how much I love the USA Today newspaper b/c it reminds me of being at cattle shows and hotels giving it as a complimentary thing. My mom would take it ever day to the barn and it would float around in our box for days. It just makes me think of family time and being on the show road! Now I am all sad!

I love the early morning and evening time I spend heat detecting.   The misty, foggy air in the hollows and the rose color light in the morning just aren't around any other time.  I also love the heavy stillness in the evenings and the cautious movements of the deer beginning their day.   I see a lot of wildlife here at Oakbar.   So far this year I've seen  deer, turkeys, and geese on a daily basis, but I've also seen eagles, a red fox vixen and her kits, a grey fox, orioles, buntings, and several types of birds I don't know the names of.    This evening my daughter and I saw a painted turtle laying her eggs and two woodducks sitting on their nests in boxes we set up a couple of weeks ago.   I particularly like the songbirds in the morning and the way the newborn calves all seem to get "revved up" in the evenings.  It just doesn't get any better than showing your calves to good friends in the evening when the weather is right.   I think God must have been a cattleman cause he sure feels close on an evening like that!!

Georgia watermelons and peaches , fresh tomatoes and any other fresh vegetables, homemade ice cream with aforementioned peaches (food is always first with me).  Florida panhandle beaches being only 2-3 hours away, since we don't have time for a real vacation.  July 4th fireworks and family reunion.  Ga. Jr. Beef Futurity, getting to see everybody after a few months of no shows, and see new calves.  Always have a topic of conversation:  the heat! (clapping)

Especially the Mocking birds and Whippoorwills, at dusk! I live on a ridge that divides two river valleys, (right on the Oregon Trail) where you can see for miles. I hardly ever miss a sunrise or sunset. Funny how some people just don't "get it"!

I love the freshness, the birds and the flowers.  I do have to say, however, my favorite time of the year is fall when the leaves turn pretty and there are pumpkins.  After a long hot summer I love the cool weather too.

Great comments!

Hello everyone.

My name is Mandy, and this is my very first post on here.  I was just reading these posts about the farm life in the Summer, and it makes me realize just how much I do miss that type of life.  I am reminded about how therapeutic is was for me personally.

I now live in the suburbs unfortunately, however it is one of my dreams and goals in life to one day be able to afford a place of my own, and once again return to the farm life in some beautiful rural community.   I am right now looking at pursuing a degree in some type of Ag Business so I can get back into my area of interest (expertise).    You know what they say, "You can take the girl (or boy) off of the farm, however you can't take the farm out of the girl.

It seems that most people who live here in the suburbs where I live are always in a hurry and a lot of them don't seem to have any type of appreciation for the farm life.  It saddens me in many ways.

To Elbee, I hear ya on the whipporwills at dusk.  I remember back when I was a little girl how I loved the sound that a whipporwill makes in the evening.  I haven't heard one in years.

To Oakbar  I know what ya mean about the stillness of the evening.   Gosh, that brings back so many memories of growing up on a farm.

To KCK  I hear ya, and I know how you feel.  Hang in there!  :)

Just wanted to say hello to everyone and keep the comments coming.

Mandy

 (welcome) Mandy!

I lived for a short time in the cities. I was miserable. I love the smells, the sounds and the people that live in rural areas.

Maybe someday you'll get your wish!

Hi Red, and thanks for the welcome.

Yes, the city life for me is not very pleasant either.  It's quiet depressing, and I have found that I get stressed out very easily living in the city with all of this traffic and congestion.  I had to move here a few years back due to personal and unfortunate circumstances, however I have every intention of somehow returning to the country some day.   I hope to be out of the city in no more than 5 years, if not sooner.

Mandy

Hey Red, sometimes it's us country people that make up the rural smell. I just got in from a day of Kansas heat/wind, and I think I better break out of the country smell in a nice shower. I wouldn't have it any other way.
