I kinda forgot the options for companies for dna markers for feed effiency, marbling and everthing. Things might of changed hands since I did the test probably 3-4 years ago. Anyone have a website handy?

Pfizer and Igenity are the 2 big ones.  If you are doing Angus, Igenity is the way to go as the Angus Assoc. has DNA enhanced EPD's if the profile is done by Ingenity.

Looks like genestar switched to numbers instead of stars. I think this test is a piece of the puzzle but not the end all.

I prefer the Pfizer 50K panel.  Not just the MVPs, but the whole panel. It's a quantum leap from the GeneStar.   It's good stuff.

Ask Igenity how many markers are accounted for in their test.  It ain't 50,000.

Before you drop the cash call Patrick Wall at ASA? The markers for SH have not been developed - this was announced at NCBA a couple of years ago. Currently ASA is collecting tail hairs on steers that also have kill data - hoping one of the companies will step up and make a marker? In my opinion the best thing you can do if you retain ownership on steers is do an actual tenderness test at North Dakota State. But if you call PW or Jake Alden they can inform u

I was wondering about this. I know I talked to a Red Angus national director once and he said that epds were the best option right now. That puts us Shorties up short cause we don't have the data yet. Man the Angus have more data than they know what to do with. I know 4 years ago we did some Durham Red bulls. Our marbling markers weren't that great but the feed effiency markers were fairly good. Had my 606 halfblood was 8 for 8 stars back then. Thought that might be good but if there are say 30 feed effiency markers not discovered yet....was it that good. If a bull was half Angus I just wondered if the test might be more valid than a non Angus calf. By yiooie yo yo we need to id at least one marble bull in the Shorthorn breed and get to moving forward in that aspect of the deal.jmo

the markers don't mean squat unless you have a means to verify it.

transitioning from correlated to causal is a big canyon.

process some animals and go see the carcasses.  it's still the only way.

also, take notice of marbling type and be aware of the fact there is something called cream marbling or something.  can't quite remember the name.

also, make sure you look at carcasses hung the same amount of hours.

or, enroll in meat science at one of the places verifying this industry.

You should have sent your steers to the great state feedout.  We just collected 135 DNA samples in western kansas last week so that when the carcass data comes in, we have the potential to vaildate against the DNA.  ASA is putting it together.
