For the last week or so we have been cleaning the calving barn and corrals getting ready to start calving April 1st. Got done Monday and decided to haul the first bunch home Saturday since we were all off and everyone could help. Been checking them everyday and nothing looked like they were getting real close. So I went up to our pasture they are on this afternoon ( about 18 miles from the barn ) to feed and check them and noticed one off by herself. I started to panic because I knew this was no good. As I'm racing to see the damage I realize it's the 2 year old Rocky Balboa heifer I gave my wife last year for our 30th wedding anniversary. ( Romantic ain't I ) I see a calf lying in front of her and it looks like it's OK but I also notice Wylie Coyote licking his lips about 40 yards away. Took the guns out of the pickup a few years ago after a Chi cow I chased all morning to corral jumped out right after I finally got her in. I pulled out the rifle to shoot her and as I pulled the trigger I found out it wasn't loaded, decided I was dangerous when upset. Anyway I chase the yote off try to throw the calf in the back of the pickup and here comes the heifer. Dropped the calf and ran faster than I have in 40 years. (good mama) Finally got them penned, ran home got the trailer, came back and loaded them up to head home. As I am leaving I look back in the pasture and guess who's back. Yup Wyle lookin for supper. Got home with proud new mamma and her 40 lb ( yes I weighed it ) XFL hfr calf. I think she had twins and Wyle beat me to the first one. Next year I'm gettin ready earlier. Gotta go I'm pooped!
