Just wondering if anyone has bred to teh Shorthorn Double Talent in the last few years and if so  what are the calves turning out to be.  We have a second calfer that we bred to Double Talent and is due any day.  It was not my choice for breeding but that is all that was left in our tank last year.  It was actually semen for our neighbor but he said to go ahead and use it.  The cow is a Wave on Wave x Angus.

Yeah, I'm seeing a red flag also with this breeding. I have not verified carrier status, but mainecattlemother, what you may be dealing with is a potential genetic defect calf. TH is a lethal genetic defect present in these bloodlines. You might want to look into that and get your cow tested if not already. Let us know and good luck.

little late for that.. cow's going to calve this week.. I'd wait until after she calves to test her...  You'd have a better chance of knowing if she's a carrier then or not.

To everyone that has posted we do not know if she is a carrier everything is unknown on her Chianina registration paper.  I did not that the Dam has a lot of Angus in her pedigree which maybe will help.  I will keep you all up to date when calf is born.  I am hoping for the best!!

Hoping for the best for you but the way genetics works it doesn't matter how much Angus she has in her - her sire is a TH carrier - she had a 50% risk of acquiring the mutation for TH from her sire - GCC Double Talent is also a TH carrier - if your cow is a carrier there is a 1 in 4 risk your calf will have the lethal genetic defect TH and a 50% risk you calf will be a carrier (thus a 25% risk the calf will be TH free) - another good reason to buy tested cattle or to test new purchases - making safe breeding choices and less worry

You can pull tail hair and send it in. Its just as good as blood and from what I understand is just as accurate. They have online forms with kits you can order for free to test your cattle for both TH, PH and since high percent angus AM.

I got an e-mail from pfizer this week saying that hair cards are now .10/ea & blood cards are .39/ea.
