I heard that Bert Moore was released by the American Shorthorn Association as their Executive Secretary. Anyone else hearing the same thing?

Bert is about as honest and decent a man as I know, and when he was hired, I felt that he would have a hard time pleasing everyone in this breed. If this is true, I wish Bert all the best in his future endevours and I want to say thank you for he did while he held this position.

I too have been told that Bert has been asked to step down as ASA exec. However I also heard that he has agreed to stay on for another 6 months before he is done with the association.  This brings great sadness to me as I think a lot of Bert, and his wife, Millie.  Bert and Millie stopped by the ranch the summer of 2011 on their way out to the Wyoming State Fair.  We had a great time touring thru the cows.  At the time the registered shorthorn cows were grazing on 1100 acres of native sandhill pasture.  Both of them stated more than once how neat it was to see shorthorns in that environment.  I learned a lot about shorthorn history that day!  All I had to give Bert was the first 2 sires of a cows pedigree and he could recite the next 4-5 generations on most cows with ease!  It was amazing.  Bert and Millie stayed for lunch that day and we talked about mostly farm/ranch life and family.  The next week after they were there, I received a "thank you" card in the mail expressing their gratitude for taking time out of my schedule to show them around and also for the great meal and fellowship.  (Bert, if you are reading this, the pleasure was all mine.) They were a class act, a breath of freash air, and a great couple to represent the breed. They will be sorely missed!  Thank You Bert!

The fact that no real reason for the board's decision really worries me as far as the prospect of hiring a quality executive secretary in the future.  Maybe there is a logical explanation for why the board did what they did.  But by keeping it secret and not going public with it makes it look like a very silly decision to me.  Who is going to want the job in Omaha after this??????????

Would it have to have been a unanimous director vote or a majority vote for such a decision?

Im not sure what it would have to be.  I have heard both, I have heard it was unanimous and I have heard that it was a majority vote, so who knows.

A year or so the new pres. And vp did articles in the countries July issue about birthdates on cattle and how maybe they were altered. Then Mr. Moore said that some epds. Were conflicting  so they had to be dropped ,just wondering if he is uncovering something and now it's biting back. After the articles in the country ! I went to some sales in October and saw powerful Jan. Feb.and mar.calves, a lot bigger than I had at home on creep. Then notice a lot of fall calves in the fields around but no fall sale calves, checked on registration  on computer and not to many fall calves registered at all. Maybe he uncovered something. Funny there's is no reason an it's quiet.

I think there is a fairly good mix of directors on the board......but a majority are show cattle people only. That scares the hell out of me. Thats why I was wondering about the vote. They let the Maines in, way back with a mixed vote.

Office management, the management of the staff  and the ability to make a definitive decision was the reason for dr. Moore being released. He is a fine gentlemen but that may not equate into a strong  leader. FYI ......it was a unanimous  vote by a well rounded  board to release him of his duties. Before this thread runs into a bunch of speculation .... I would encourage you to contact a board member to hear the facts.

I would encourage them to put out a press release letting members know what is going on in their  assiociation before speculation has a chance to run rampant. That is why we give them our emails so they can keep us informed of what is going on.

Talk to a board member for the facts.  I've known Bert Moore and his family for a long time and have the utmost respect for all of them.  I appreciate his freindship and his efforts as Executive Secretary.  Just talk to a board member before jumping to any conclusions.

We should just start a new registry.  A mandatory performance reporting registry; one w/o genetic defects.
Yes, but DNA testing as well as making data-collection "producer-friendly"=Whole-Herd Reporting that ain't overpriced. Less office staff; More Field Services Rep's; Zero-tolerance for fraudulent data reporting, or manipulation.......Just about covers it, doesn't it?

Here we go.  We'll even give Dr Moore his spot back-   For real though, how many registered members are there?

I completely agree.  WHR is BS - and the fact that you can register a calf w/o any data whatsoever is ever bigger BS.

Does the Angus breed bar animals with genetics defects from registry?  Do you have to test every Angus calf for defects before you get a registration paper?  I sincerely doubt if Shorthorns are the only ones with data manipulation problems.  Do you really think that every Simmental calf has a 100% accurate birth weight reported?  Do you truly believe that every animal with a reported weaning and/or yearling weight actually crossed a scales?  Face it.  Humans raise cattle.  When humans are involved, crap happens.  I don't like it, you don't like it, but that's the way it is.  All we can do is manage our own herds they way they should be managed and support the herds that we believe are handled with integrity.  A breed association can only do so much.  The rest is in the hands of the people that actually raise the cattle.  That will never change.
