With the current lull in the cattle market down under, everyone was pretty cautious heading in to the National Poll Hereford Show and Sale at Dubbo earlier this week.
But thanks to some big station orders, and top quality bulls, the sale exceeded expectations and in fact, broke the top price record.
Days Whiteface from Bordertown, SA, sold their senior and grand champion bull Days Calibre G74 for $90,000... surpassing the $85,000 record made by another Day family bred bull, Allendale National W168, in 2003.
All up, 124 from 142 Pollie bulls sold to average $7061. In the breakdown, 59 from 69 junior bulls averaged $5119 and 65 from 73 bulls averaged $8823.

A few details on Calibre: By Allendale Waterhouse D1 and from Allendale Dawn C62 (by Allendale Robin Hood Z239, and from a National W168 cow).
He weighed 1100kg (2425lb?) with a 143 square centimetre eye muscle area, 22 millimetres fat on the rump and 16mm fat on the rib, with a 47cm scrotal circumference.
Calibre's EBVs put him in the top 1% of the breed for 200-day weight, 400-day weight, mature cow weight, scrotal size, carcase weight and EMA, and for the supermarket and EU $indexes.
He is in the top 5% for gestation length, 600-day weight, milk and intramuscular fat (marbling), and for the grass fed and grain fed steer $indexes.

Calibre was bought by Bowen and Melville Park studs and has gone straight into quarantine for semen collection.

That's a pretty sharp bull. I haven't seen many Aussie Herefords, but a bull like that is good anywhere. Did I hear right that the Day family averaged nearly 40k on five bulls? Do any Hereford studs export semen to the US?

Yep, $34,600 for five bulls. This bull is being collected for North America right now, there have been a few studs who have exported semen in the past.
