I cant be more frustrated with the current manufacturers of cattle ear tags.  They have been turning out cheap junk! We have tried every brand and have even double tagged cattle putting one in each ear.  We tag them when they are being bred and are lucky if they last long enough to tell if they pass over their AI date.  We have been in the cattle business 45 years and are not amatures at this.  We have checking the tightness of the buttons after tagging to make sure they are secure.  The tags just keep breaking at the neck of the button and falling out.  I have found them laying on the ground and the button breaks off at the neck and out they come.  These are brand new tags.  They fall apart like they are five year old dry rotted junk.  We are going to go back to chains and neck tags if this keeps up. Rediculous!

Have you tried one piece tags? We use Z Tags and I personally think they are great! You dont have to try and find the buttons when it is time to breed which I think is great! We have been using them for the last 4 years on our 100 head cow herd and I can count on one hand the number of cows we have had to retag. The ones that we are retagging are generally the cows that had button tags in their ears to begin with. We probably retag 1 cow a year that have had the one piece tag in them.

I'll second that.  The Z tags have been very good compared to the button tags.  Even up here when it's -40 C we don't replace very many.
