Easy Calving Shorthorn Bulls

I have a family that has a JPJ yearling heifer.  They would like to breed her Shorthorn, but I am not as familiar with Shorthorn genetics as some of you on here.  Bull needs to have some style to him as the family would like to show the calf if possible, and there is a chance the heifer is a TH carrier.

Is Lakeside Nitro 0804U easy calving?

Yes he is. I know Martindell Farms had several calves by him this fall out of some of their heifers and to my knowledge they didn't have any problems.

Nitro was the 1st son Of Captain to sell at public auction he was consigned to  Ohio Beef Expo 09".Stade, Kolt and Aegerter purchased him for $7800. He is still covering cows and to my knowledge so are his 3 full brothers . Nitro's dam is  now at Paint Valley Farms, Oh. She is old and producing $ . Nitro's maternal sister has made some impressive bulls to ( 704T). The cow family behind Nitro is the very cow family that produce TPS Coronet Leader 21st years ago.  Nonpariels are an old family in the breed and Nitro's dam is yet another to prove longevity is what is all about. Leader 21st is the grandsire to Jake's Proud Jazz - as you know JPJ covered pastures for a long time too!
Captain the sire of Nitro is still going and so is his dam at age 9- she herself along with daugthers have made many herd sires as well.  The DRC breeding in Captain's pedigree is one of the oldest herds in the USA. Nitro's sire at a year of age A&T Captain Obvious 606S - he had never been handled prior to the glamour hair cut and photo. The quiet disposition holds true to Nitro and many other progeny of Captain. The heavy hair coats are there but they do slick off.  Feel free to message about Nitro or Call Jeff Aegerter.

I like Nitro's dam--she's a great one, a Nonpareil, and she has Homeplace back in her pedigree.  When Joe Woods saw AZ Dynamo's sire, HOMEPLACE IMPROVER 9245, on his way to TX, Joe said, "that's a pretty good bull."  Joe had an amazing eye for outstanding cattle--Joe truly studied them.  Improver 57th X Payoff was a great cross!  Our cows are 100% Homeplace, so we use Nitro's sire, Captain Obvious (CO), and his calves have all been born unassisted from our 2 year-old JJC Wild Side daughters.  Convenience traits appeal to me, and Captain cattle excel in them!  We have owned many Red Angus cross cows (we are all Shorthorn now), and the CO cattle have real world convenience traits similar to RA.

Dale-  When we purchased Nitro's dam Stevenstead Nonpariel, she was an added lot in Dick Brahman's sale. I will not say what we paid- Stevensteads were old breeder friends on my Dad's. In fact this cow family was purchased originally from my father probably in the mid 60's to early 70's.  Her sire and or grandson of AZ Homeplace Improver 9245- Bernadale Superset was a truck - way ahead of his time, thick deep and moderate, like the female we had just purchased. Bernadale Superset had an abcess in his jaw- so she was one of the last calf crops. According to the late Mike Dugdale. Superset was a calf champion in Denver. I would love to see photos of Homeplace Improver 9245

I have had good luck with hillside leader. They are stylish and would probably show. Not trying to stir the pot or bad mouths bull but in my experience with nitro on one heifer. Remember this is only one example so they may not always be that way. I had a really nice showy thick daybreak express cow bred her to nitro and he took the easy fleshing nice look right out of her.

I've had really good luck with Captain Obvious.  No calving problems out of cows or heifers.  As far as being able to show...I took a 6 month old Captain heifer to the TN Beef Agribition this year and she stood Reserve Champion.

What works on Jazz and have 1 that will show?- MAV BELLRINGER-look no further than theDurham Nation Sales  Catalogue-Jungles in ND- KABA breeding works great too-like ALM CHILLER, GB Daybreak Express-pictured is a young hiefer by him wish I could post the video-only Shorthorn in a "black" sale (couple weeks ago)-most correct animal and top seller of that sale-out of a Chiller female.-Daybreak Express is a long time hiefer bull really worksIf they have any clubbie-ditto for-JSF Capiche works great, JSF Troubador works great and lot 25 is a nice Lakeside Nitro(see these in Jungles catalogue again)  HC Touchdown-worked very well on a Proud Jazz 1st calver I bred-and not so great but low Bw on another 1st calver-BUT both calves were under 75 pounds-Then there are the bulls of Jaime Diamond-several are way good hiefer bulls-these are just some options O0

I could recommend Prophecy who has worked very well in our program. I have attached 2 videos of him.  First is a sample of his offspring and the second is videos of him as a 7 year old and this year as a 9 year old.  His calving ease is 7.5 which is in the top 2% of the breed and his BW -3.5 which is in the top 1% of the breed.

Another bull I could mention is Diamond Regal Legend 4R.  His CE is 4.4 which is in the top 10% of the breed.  Attached is a photo of him and one of his daughters.


I love the photo of the heifer Mark posted.

I would go with Captain or a bull from Lovings.  The double duty lines and Kapers they have work really well on the JPJ influenced cattle that I have seen.

Have used Captain Obvious  & the Rob Sneed 034 bull on 2-5 yr old cows; calves came easily enough that I wouldn't squinch up too much about using either on heifers.
 
Have used Waukaru Goldmine 2109 for several years - enough so that I'd be comfortable using him on anything but the smallest Angus heifer - and even those might do OK with him.
Have some Waukaru Gold Card 5042 calves in this fall's crop, out of 2nd-calfers - slender, easily born - would probably work fine on most heifers.

DRC 101VM (Dover) and Coalpit Creek Leader 6th are on my short list to try over the next few years, along with some other posters have referenced earlier...
