Has anyone had any experience with these thin cable halters?Tony Austin seems pretty high on them, they look like borderline animal cruelty to me!

I'm assuming you're talking cruise control / emergency brake halters.
We purchased one a while back for my daughter's heifer.  She was born on our place and has been handled by us since day one...she was a bit head strong . I'd say she has more "leadership qualities" than the other dog gentle calves in the group. Anyway. ..she began yanking the lead from my daughter's hand, just being naughty. The wire halter served as a reminder that while wearing it she is not the "driver", my daughter is.  It can rub them and cause pain. Like with anything use caution and good sense. This weekend we are looking to "wean" her off it. It will be her choice whether or not we end up having to use it. It is definitely not a training tool as far as halter training. That would definitely be cruel. And I think using it on a animal that has anxiety /fear issues is not a good idea.
I am glad we have had it in our toolbox for sure. With my daughter all of 100 pounds and her heifer 600+  it has helped keep her safe.
