I am wondering what everyone does for a daily routine with your steer. What time do you put in cooler? Do you bathe first? Do you blow them out? What time do you let out? Do you rinse before you let them out? We are new to the steer showing business and any advice/direction is greatly appreciated! When do you start your routine? January? Spring? I live in Wisconsin. What temperature do you keep you cooler rooms?

Our routine depends on the day and time of year- we aren’t able to wash/rinse/tie up in the mornings once school starts- my husband and I both work. During the summer we feed early- usually by 6:30 and tie up for about 2 hours when they are done eating. Feed again in the afternoon between 3:30-4 then tie up again while stalls and water troughs are cleaned and feed is made for the next day- then we walk them and work with a show stick. We rinse/wash atleast three times a week. Once school starts it’s the same except all we do is feed in the morning- everything else has to wait for the evening- they are in a stall under fans al day. Saturday and Sunday are the days they are tied up the longest and washed/rinsed really well- since we have more time then. I wish I was one of those that stayed home and had the ability to work with our cattle all day- but I’m not so we have to make our own routine that works for us.

Our daily routine
First: our final show is in the first part of July we also live in southern California, we would pick up our calves in Oct/Nov, so this how it worked for us.
First part of season Oct-Feb
Morning: feed
Afternoon: Run calves into stall, halter, blow out, take to wash rack, rinse, comb hair up and forward, moved back to stall and blow hair up and forward until dry. Tied standing for about 1 hour (calves have already been up and standing for at least an hour already so a total of 2 hours. Move calves back to kick out pen. Work on setting calves up prior to kicking out, calves had to at least set up and stand correctly once before letting them free.
Wash with soap once a week, leave in cream rinse 2 a week.
March
Start trying to get them to shed out, using grill bricks, curry comb, Sullivan’s shedding come whatever works. Wash once a week.
April 1st: (90+ days prior to final show) Prior to sun up, calves brought in, rinsed, brushed until dry (up at a 45% and forward)and blown out, Sheen or Revive hair, work leg hair, fed and placed in dark stall with fans and a swamp cooler, if you have a cooler they would go in that. After school kids would water calves, rinse again, brush until dry, blow out and put back in stall. At dark calves would get Pink worked into their hair, blown out again, prior to kicking out, still make them set up prior to kicking out. By this time both the kids and the calves will usually be setting up without the stick, they lead them right into it. (Our calves learned that the quicker they set up the sooner they get free)
Each calf is deferent when it comes to hair product, for the standard calf we basically sheened or revived in the morning and pinked in the night.
