Have any of you had calves with a light blue cast in the Iris? It's not the whole Iris, but when you look at our Simi heifer, you can see light blue on the top, and bottom. She is three weeks old, defiantly not blind, not Cataracts, just blue color.
Very odd. Never have seen this before. Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen.
I will try and get a close up of her eyes this weekend.

I see something similiar if a feedlot heifer has a calf, when they are intaking so much corn something must throw off the eye and the calf will have a blue haze in the eye, usua;lly calf can see fine.... not sure if this is a similar situation you are expeirencing

Not in this case. The Mother is a first calf heifer purchased at The North Central Simmental sale last November. She is a LMS Perfect DreamX 4181 (commercial) Heat Seeker
Her heifer calf is out of Ever Ready. She has been fed the same as all of our other breds.
The eye color is very noticable, especially when she is in the sun.
We have never seen this before.

In horses we always called that a glass eye, my mom's mare in high school always threw them and they were always jam up working horses.  She was a quarter and she did it bred to quarters, apps, and a thoroughbred by accident once

I think I know what you are talking about.  I've seen something similar in a few of the newborn calves we've had here.  It is a noticibly lighter grayish color.  It darkens or clears up in time - I was looking at one calf last night that is about 6 weeks old and no longer noticed that she had lighter eyes.  The calves we've noticed it in are simmis and are all AI sired by the same bull.

Does it show up in a picture?
If I can get close enough to the little snot, it should show up. It isn't pink eye for sure. We have dealt with that before.
Interesting that Kanshow has seen a similar thing, and it was in Simmis. This little gal is 3/4 Simmi.
Thanks for all the input!!

Lowann, does yours appear to be in only half the eye or all around the iris?  Its a weird thing for sure.  We tried to take a picture but it doesn't show up.

The top and the bottom of the Iris. Her eyes are normal looking, just the light blue cast. I will see if it shows up in a picture (if I can get close enough with a camera) she is a pistol, and can defiantly see very well!
The first time I really noticed it, I thought she was partially blind, till I got close enough. It's kind of pretty. I hope she keeps them.

That sounds just exactly like ours.. it isn't a complete circle but broken in halves.   And they can see..

Ours are both PB Simmi so by pedigree I don't think they can be TH carriers..

Here she is. Seeing it in person is more effective, but you get the idea.

I dont know if this is the same thing or not, but about every five years or so, we have a calf born with blue or cloudy looking eyes and appear blind.  An old DVM told us to give a shot of vitamin A (1 cc).  Within about a week, eyes seem to look better and calf has vision.

I had one several weeks a go that looked like you are describing--  light blue cloudy look to his eyes and seemed to be watering, but had vision.  Gave him vit A, and looks totally fine now.

Maybe this is like they say, - will save the ones that are going to live any how!

have a good one

To me it looks like a blue eye we see on Paint horses. We have an Aussie dog that has that also; partial blue eye, and she is 9 years old. I have never seen a cow with a blue eye, but I guess it can happen!
