Hi all. We generally start calving in April with my cows, and calve the rest of the herd in May, and occasionally into June. But with that dry spell (5 year drought), I have a couple cows that calved late, and one that went clear to August. So, what are falls good for? I mean, how do you market them? Would it feasible to just roll those lates over to fall calving? Thanks.

If you lived in Texas it would be. Great for major shows down here.

We show fall borns in Florida and I think a lot of your southern states show fall borns.

If they are seedstock quality, the offspring can be sold as "long" yearlings into a spring calving operation or fall calving operation.  Long yearling bulls are kind of nice in that you get a little more maturity than with a regular yearling.

Well, all some good considerations there. I guess that long yearling stuff might work. Trouble is, my last cow to calve was my best one! Of course.  ::) But, tomorrow is that little bull's fate. He shall be a bull no more.

If we have really good cows go late we will sometimes flush them so you don't waste a year of production on them and get them back into early spring, fall calves aren't very marketable here, but they are in some parts of the country.
