Had a great couple of days in Henrietta with Robert (Chambero) and his family working and breeding cattle.  The last day, I brought my daughter with me, and got a kick out of what happened when her and Robert's youngest son were let loose on a group of calves while we were working.  Here are some pics of what happened.  Within a 1 hour time frame, they had picked out a couple of victims, sorted them out of about 60 other calves, and with halters in hand, had this little girl haltered up. They made a pretty good team.

There is no better way to learn about how to move, sort, handle cattle than just getting in there and doing it.

Awesome Zane. Our son used to do the same thing. He couldn't wait to rope'm up. He broke a few that way from when they were young. We would take them to fair and he & his friends would have fun. Poor calves!!. I'll never forget the day one of the calves got away from them and ran out on the race track. Sad/worried boys there for awhile, but nothing hurt!! Thanks for the pictures and the memories!!

We had great weekend working calves and AIing cows.  In addition to Zane, we had a crew of probably 10 family members & slave labor (high school kids).

Photo 1 - Zane helping vaccinate.  We give our fallborns three vaccines - Vision 7, Bovishield Gold FP5VL5, and Presponse HM.

Photo 2 - Holt getting cutting lessons from me.  He actually cut this one while I "held".  This one will likely be a show steer next year - a Walks Alone x Collins Meyer calf.

Photo 3 - Just how many times can you get kicked in a day by pushing 200 calves to the working chute over the course of a day?  Conner and his buddies found out.

Photo 4 - Zane doing his thing. Conner was quite glad to accept the ever important job of holding the tail after finding out how many times 200 calves can kick you in a day.

We really do have a good time working cattle at our place.  No hollering/yelling/cussing, nobody hurt, no cows/calves hurt, no runaways, etc.  Good people and good facilities let us work calves in 7 different pastures over the course of about 9 hours.

Gotta love it.  My kids always look forward to working calves, just like I did at that age.  And it sure is nice when they get big enough to help.
