Topper was a interesting bull and DL seemed to have sampled him more then anyone I know so I would respect her opinion. Maybe she could elaborate a bit more and give us the good, bad and the ugly on him.

Hey Telos - well Don Coover asked me one time about Topper and said he seemed to be a bull with a "cult following" - he is little known (or perhaps ignored) total outcross bull (Andy Pandy - there's a name you don't hear much in Maine circles) - there are several Topper bulls he is # 177587

He sires really good cows with great temperament - never met a crazy Topper calf - he even seems to calm the loops! Cows are big footed, good boned, deep ribbed high capacity cows that are excellent mothers. They are the kind of cows you enjoy looking at in the field - correct, beautiful udders, long strided

Although a black bull he throws both red and color which probably makes him unpopular with some

From the picture he is more moderate framed than I expected. Nice looking bull.

Topper is a bull I have never heard of, but his picture really is interesting to me. Also the fact that he is unrelated to most of the unsound bulls used today. I sure don't doubt you guys when you say he is a good maternal bull, but would someone with more experience an brains than me please tell me why we don't see him in pedigrees today. Just from his picture I would sure consider using him. Please help. Thanks in advance.

Are the Habenero cows good uddered? I'm thinking about  using a bull that is a maternal sib to him. Thanks, Brent

Our favorites of the newer bulls are Dr. Who and Hard Core.  I like many of the Money Man's we have seen, just didn't get enough frame for more moderate type cows and haven't seen enough finish at the end on the ones around here, but he is a great choice for a calving ease Maine bull.  Haven't had any yet, but have several Gigolo Joe's coming and I think he will also be one of the long lasting newer maternal bulls, really excited about the matings coming out of him.

Topper is a bull owned by Morton Farms of Texas - I found him in the 1997 McCune Enterprises catalog and don't think I really ever saw him anywhere else - I think you don't see him because 1) you aren't looking in the right place (JOKE ;)) and 2) he was not heavily promoted and 3) he was not owned by a "big name" national outfit that showed extensively and 4) he wasn't "faddy" -

Now I have probably unlocked the key and the semen will all disappear!

Since all my Topper cows are clean it never occurred to me to have the bull tested - he does trace to Dalton 8 or 9 generations back so I will ship off a straw of semen tomorrow and let you know what his PHA status is ...

PC metric in there, also bysantin, cosic, dabla, capone a couple of times, the etula butt, crack's in there, a holstein (just like smithbuilt), bysantin on novino (someone knew what to try there).  this bull confirms a lot.

i'm thinking that if i could have bred a bull, he has just about everything i would have thrown in there.
