Bummer, I was realy wanting to see if someone had realy started a topic on cow "TYPES", it looks like should be labled cow "BREED".  And if so, I agree, there are a lot of missing options, a lot better I should say.

Deep bodied, long spined, big hipped, but moderate framed. They calve easy with moderate birth weights. Good udder structure with adequate milk. They also have to breed back within 60 days every year...  <cowboy>

What is long spined? I always here this......do some breeds have more vertabrae than others? Doesn't long spined just mean bigger.......thus harder keeping in a desert type situation. What is short sided? A balance issue?

Long spined is the opposite of short coupled. Deep sided is the opposite of shallow bodied. Same amt of vertebrae, just more length between them.  Sheep or goats should be designed to excel in desert environments, not cattle.  Imo, the only measurement thats associated with being hard doing is height.  As far as depth, width, and length- in that order-bigger is better.

Length between vertebrae.......what the hell does that mean? Is this natural cushion for structural correctness? You want long vertabraes in order for cattle to break down at an earlier age.....so the nations cow herd numbers are reduced? So cattle prices go up? Weak behind the shoulders.....lenghth of spine....thats the best that Gods plan can come up with? Natural selection? Show me a long spined cow and I will show you that she breaks down at least a year before here her sibblings do.

I personally think the "long spined" is stupid......unless someone can change my mind. What does "thick butted" mean? A calf that is a freak beyond what nature recommends? We make these freaks grand champion steers cause they are almost impossible to produce? Freak azoids that have no real value as far as common sense or the real world is concerned. So we spend thousands of dollars and millions of dollars on show products to have a beauty contest of cattle loaded with genetic defects in order to teach young kids how to be crooks on their weekends off. It's getting a bit crazy.jmo
