Looking for feedback from anyone that has shown to these men within the last few years, not only with regard to their ability/job done, but their integrity/character as well (non-political):
a.  Jim Mazuerkiewicz
b.  Steve Kennedy
c.  Gary Clayton
d.  Tracy Haymes
e.  Brandon Callus
f.  Doug Satree
g.  Wade Shackelford
h.  John Edwards

Thank you!

Brandon Callis will do a fine job.
Im in agreement on Brandon. I've also shown under John Edwards and Jim Mazuerkiewicz, John will be very blunt when he judges and will tell you whatever is on his mind. I'm kinda sketchy on Mazurerkiewics though, i was not impressed at all with what he picked when we showed under him, but it was his opinion and his was the one that mattered.

Ive seen all of them judge, they all have their own styles and own opinions on what is best. With that said, im not a fan of the style of cattle jim mazeurkewitz uses, doug satree is about as political as they come, and from personal dealings i would question his integrity, and dr. Edwards is an opinionated fool whose cattle sorting skills dont impress me in the least. The rest of these men should do a pretty stand up job. However if i were to choose one, i would go with brandon callis

My kids have shown under Brandon Callus on more than one occasion and he gets a vote of confidence.  Don't have any experiences with any of the others.

I judged collegiately at the same time as Brandon Callis, have seen him judge many shows, great judge.  I think most of these are great judges, people just tend to not like judges that dont like the type of cattle that person is bringing to them.  I dont knock a judge for not liking my cattle as long as he is consistent with what he picks, and what he says on the mic actually matches the cattle.
We are hauling a heifer right now that is probably to long spined for her frame, I mean freight train long, and this weekend a judge said we really needed to make her longer bodied to make her competitive.  I dont disagree with our heifer placing where she did, but I hate when a judge says something like that which completely doesnt match the animal he is talking about.
Again, I think most of these judges are pretty good, yeah a few of em have been known to be a little political at times, but its hard to find a judge these days that isnt political at least sometimes.  I dont think any of them are overly political.

Agree completely with the opinions of Callis. We've shown under him a few times and have always walked away feeling like he placed the show logically and consistently.      Integrity/Character A+!!

We have shown under all of them except for Wade, Tracy and John

Steve Kennedy and Brandon Callis are both real good judges.

Jim Mazuerkiewicz has his own opinions (strange at times), he likes straight shouldered animals, dont take a freak in front of him.

Gary Clayton is a good steer judge

i like showing under brandon, he knows cattle but so do all the other guys, Mr. Callis is good with us kids in that he talks and gets on a more personal level and you leave the ring feeling like he is your friend (nothing aginst the others i just havent shown around them much). shakelford is one of my favorites though, not that he did the best job but i did good and thats all i care about  (lol). i took a dry fat heifer in the ring at 20 months old and he used her as breed champ because she had pizzaz. he wants em thick and clubby

Brandon at Phoenix year before last- too lazy to walk to the end of the ring to pick champion heifer- had the kid bring her to hin-  heifer never won anything before or since--

Kennedy at a state fair  comments on champ heifer "she's crippled but not that crippled"

Known John Edwards for years-- a bit blunt but capable

Mazuerkiewicz  a Brahman man at a& m  too wrapped up in that train of thought to translate it to good halter cattle with some hair--- saw him stand a Louisville  div champ 4th  once -- too much muscle-- his words

Shakleford knows a good one but will take care of his buddies, same for Satree

Lots of judges are too damn concerned with what they will look like standing behind the champ at the backdrop, so they use the pretty one with lots of hair. However in all reality the majority of steers in tx get shown slick. Most of the cattle that do really well will be 3rd or 4th all summer, and surprise u in the fall (when the pretty ones are falling apart).

As for the quote about Dr. M, hes always been a very cutability minded judge, meaning ive seen him time and time again, choose muscular hard doing ones over deeper bodied easy feeding ones with enough muscle. So i can imagine how coarse and hard that one was that he said had too much muscle.

I, for one, appreciate your honest opinion.  You sound like you've given a set or two or reasons yourself.

This is an interesting thread and my kids don't show in TX but these guys do tend to show up other places.  It does sound like Callis is the go-to guy and will take that information to the fair board this fall.

Grew up 30 miles west of A&M and also attend Texas A&M currently. I am and never was a fan of Dr. Maz period cattle or anything involved just an integrity stand point with me, I could see edwards doing a better job with females than steers but i agree with everything said on this thread.
