Feeding Cooked Corn

Hello fellow steer planeters... i have some question for you all....
1.  What is the water to corn ratio for cooking corn for steers ?
2.  What are some ways for cooking corn for steers ?

Hope to get some feed back from you .

We bought one of those roasters with temp control. Started out with a one to one ratio corn to water. May need to fine tune it some as you go. Put in just enough to be absorbed by the corn but but make sure it is enough or the corn will burn.

Steer loved it.

We use 2 parts water to 1 part corn and cook it in just a regular crock pot.

I have an old feed cooker that has sat in a corner of our barn for over 40 years.I holds about a bushel of dry grain which is probably closer to 3 bushel when cooked. I have seen a bigger model of this feed cooker that is close to 5 ft high.  I remember my dad using it when I was a kid for our show steers and it sat there unused for over 30 years. I plugged it in this fall and cooked corn and barley in it. I agree with Jill that it is usually 2 parts water to 1 part corn. The corn will absorb a lot of water so don't be afraid to add more water part way through while cooking. The cattle love cooked feed. i had to be careful as my show heifers would almost stampede to the trough when I fed it so i had to watch that they did not knock me into or over the feed trough.

We use a roaster liek mom uses to cook hams in in the kitchen have not done it for a couple of years but I think dont quoter me though we put in 16 lbs of dry grain( corn or corn and oats)  and then filled it full of water put it on high and came back next feeding ran the cooker around the clock anc fed every 12 hours would be just a little water left in the bottom when done

OK! 2nd year showing market steers and I have to ask why do you cook it and was does it do for them? Is it really warm when you feed it to them or cooled? Do you not cook it in the summer due to heat?  curiosity just kills me!  lol

It adds finish, I am currently using it on my heifer, and love the results! Cooking breaks open the seed coat, and releases starches and sugars it makes it easier to digest, and they get more out of it than just using regular uncooked corn.

It's best fed warm, it warms them up like Hot Chocolate does for us in the cold winter months lol.  I wouldn't feed it in the summer as it makes the ration pretty hot (burns hair off).

we cook corn in the winter, barley in the summer just let it cool enough to eat dont want to burn their tongues!!!also u can find steamed rolled barley at some feed stores, for the summer makes a big difference on the finish most of the bulls at denver get feed cooked corn before they get there u can but alot of weight in a hurry !!!!

The easiest way that i have found to do it is say u want to start feeding it tommorow....(1) tonight take the amount of corn that u want to cook, and put it uncooked into an ice chest (2) then boil the same amount of water as u have corn (3) once the water comes to a boil take it and pour it over the corn (4) put the lid on the ice chest (5) in the morning ur corn should be cooked as well as cool enough for them to eat. It works well for us!

Do you cook plain shelled corn, and then that's all they get, or do you mix it with other feed or show feed?

I cook whole corn and mix it with your regular show ration. I have tried rolled corn but it can get really sticky like super thick oatmeal that has sat in the pot too long. The cattle still eat it and like it , it just sticks to everything you use to feed it. Whole corn will swell up and it gets soft and looks almost good enough to eat myself.... maybe that is why I am fat!

this is the first time i have done it, and i am doing a gallon in the morning and one at night.

We are feeding steam flaked corn......is that comparable to cooked corn?  Can we cook steam flaked corn?

Where do you find the cookers with timers on them?

Were do you find the cookers? Can you also cook oats?

If you want the large cookers sullivans did carry them but they are High we use the 18quart roasters from Walmart about $30 you can cook oats if there is space in the cooker we cook oats and corn together
