Here is my daughter's Simmy cross steer.  He weighed 952 lbs today.  His ADG has been 3.18 for the past 2 months.  He's eating 12 lbs of Martindale finisher twice daily (6% fat) and free choice hay.  We plan on possibly taking him to the Texas State Fair (October 2 or 190 days away) with our tri county fall festival as a back-up.  I expect his ADG to slow down in the upcoming Texas heat but we have no experience holding one back.  If he continued at this rate he'd be 1550.  Would you
a.  keep him at 12 lbs per feeding (8 finisher 4 beet pulp) or
b.  swap to a developer ration of 11% protein and 3% fat or something else?
Any other advice is welcomed.  Thanks.

If it were me, I'd put him on the developer ration you mentioned. You'll have to play with the amounts to see how he does on them, but I'm guessing he will need around 16 to 18 pounds a day if he's an easy feeder.  He looks to be a big framed calf and will probably finish out at 1400 plus. I am not a fan of holding one for a long time early in the feeding period. I like to feed a calf to make him grow and do my holding at the end. I rarely have one that looks too stale doing it this way. If he isn't getting fat enough later on, you could switch him back to the finishing ration 90 to 120 days out. Or you could keep him on the developer and add a bypass fat. Good luck.
