Start @ one half lb per head per day & work up to 1 lb per head per day. I don't know the limit on the top side of this product.

We fed them a pound a feeding (2 feedings a day) as a top dress, animals on track we fed the last 3 months prior to the fair, calves that were behind we started earlier. Start with 1/2 pound a feeding and work them up to 1 pound a feeding over about a weeks time, if they start getting to loose back off of the SRB for a day or 2. It can also be used when holding an animal, it will help them maintain a fresh appearance and keep their fat when on a low cal mix.

So what is the real difference between Stabalized Rice Bran and regular rice bran?  I can't get "stabalized" rice bran in my area, only "regular" pelleted form.  Does it have to do with making it keep longer vs. spoiling?

As it was explained to me, the regular rice bran starts breaking down as soon as it is produced, the stabilized rice bran does not, it maintains it nutritional value for a much longer period.

40 pound bag, 2 pounds a day will last 20 days, I think not knowing how long it sits in the bag prior to it being purchased is what would keep me away from the Rice Bran. I will add that I got the information from a Stabilized Rice Bran web site. The SRB does smell just as fresh with the last scoop as it does with the first.

For me, We started with SRB had good success with it, I would be worried to even try the other. Kind of like always ordering the same thing at my favorite Mexican restaurant, I know I will enjoy it, why risk ordering something new and getting something I might not like.

What is Rice Bran?

During the milling process, the outer layer of the rice kernel is removed. This outer layer which is the hard, brown husk is rice bran. Rice bran is one of the most nutritious parts of the rice. And is, in fact, a very healthy choice for horses.

Rice bran contains niacin, iron, thiamin, vitamin B-6, potassium, fiber, phosphorus and magnesium. And with a suffusion of so many minerals, it is no surprise that rice bran is an excellent source of nutrition.

However, it is very important to understand, that raw rice bran, (that which has not gone through the stabilization process) cannot be fed to the horses. This is because unstabilized rice bran leads to digestive problems in horses. Neither is raw rice bran palatable and nor is it easy for the horse to digest. It is only after the stabilization process that rice bran can be consumed as a healthy and nutritious feed for horses.

Stabilized Rice Bran

The reason for rice bran to undergo the stabilization process before it can be consumed, is due to the ingredients it contains and what they can do to the horses. Rice bran has a very high content of oil (among other minerals) and it is due to this that it needs to undergo the stabilization process. Rice bran oil for horses can prove to be harmful because this oil content also has a portion of potent lipase and therefore it might become rancid in a short span of time. And spoiled rice bran adds to the digestive problems for horses. The stabilization process completely breaks down the lipase activity which leads to the spoilage. But during this process, it does not destroy the nutritional value of the bran.

Davidsonranch,

Stabilized rice bran comes in both meal and pelleted form.  Are you sure what is being referred to as "regular rice bran" isn't just the stabilized meal form?

X-bar what have your results been with either? I have had success with the stabilized, so that is what I recommend, I would be concerned that a bag of rice bran may have set on a shelf for several months prior to purchase.

I've used both and noticed no difference. You didn't just recommend stabilized, you suggested the typical was harmful.

X-bar, at no point did I say it was harmful, I did post information from different web site that stated that SRB was better for horses and why.
As I have stated many times prior, I feed SRB and it has worked for us, so I recommend it to others, I have not fed the other nor do I intend to, my choice.
