I have a fella who we compete against at the local shows and he is feeding his cattle pure grain, open slather in a paddock feeder.  Won't this screw his cattle for the year?  Should I tell him he is going to stuff them up, or let him find out himself?

If you have a lot of experience and he doesn't, and you know what you're talking about, you might offer your opinion in a respectful way. If this isn't a newcomer, maybe he knows more about his feeding program than you do. I would probably mind my business in that case and see if there was something to be learned from him.

cattle need hay. they are ruminents. i would suggest asking him about his feeding program and see if he really knows about cattle. he might just be a newby that is experimenting. which  could have fatal results. just politely find out his thoughts behind his plan and if it doesnt make any sense suggest that he talk to vet about his feeding program because a vet would be a reliable source he would believe

I am not familiar with the term, does "open slather" mean "free feed"? Are the calves fed any hay? Do they kick them out at night on pasture?
