Here in Georgia our show season has been over for about a month now. My steer barely made weight at the State Show and I need to sell the steer. He is a Simmental Cross born in September. Now this steer is around 900 lbs. give or take. I need to get this steer to a market weight or my desired weight which is around 1000 lbs. The question I am asking is what is the quickest way to put weight on this steer? What different hay and/or feeds can I give this steer to reach that desired weight?

Currently I am feeding the steer a Show Calf Ration: Crude Protein: 11.5% (min), Crude Fat: 3%(min), Crude Fiber: 9%(max). Also I am mixing in Steam Rolled Corn: Crude Protein: 7.5% (min), Crude Fat: 2% (min), Crude Fiber: 9% (max). He is getting 18 lbs. of feed a day. Of that, 10 lbs. is the Show Calf Ration and the other 8 lbs. is the Steam Rolled Corn. Also, I am feeding him a low quality feed that we harvest here on our own farm, I don't know what different grasses are in that hay.

Thank You.

First, at 3% of body weight, your steer should be consuming 27lbs of feed daily. His hay should be limited to 1 or 2 flakes daily.

Ok, so increase the feed consumption of the steer. Is there anything else that I need to give him to increase that gain? Any feed changes? Should I give more or less of the show calf ration or the steam rolled corn? That will answer my original question.

Thank you.
