Marketing of show cattle today is based so much on first impressions. Can this be misleading? I will never forget a Shorthorn sale I went to in roughly 1979 in Kansas. There was a couple of kids showed up at the sale with a new pickup, trailer, the right clothes and whatever. I remember over hearing one of them making fun of a goofy looking old gentlemen in overalls....what a retard they stated....then 10 minutes later this goofy old retard(owner and the breeder of all the cattle for sale did the pre sale speech. They went on to have the hottest sale in the breed in the next hour. Have you ever had a coach or parent or teacher or whatever that pushed you awfull hard that you disliked that now you credit alot of your personal success to? I know that I ran into a guy that I really disliked. We were combatants in sports. I got into two fist fights with the guy. I ended up being best man in his wedding 6 years latter. Most people know people who started with absolutely nothing and built bussinesses and people who had stuff handed to them and lost it all. I once knew a guy who bragged that he had always worked for himself and never had to work for anyone else. He inherited 20 million dollars and left this world with a 100,000$ production sale. Does this make him a breeder to be looked up to or an idiot? Some of the people with the biggest hearts and the better breeders in the business don't win national championships but they do compete with the big boys and raise families doing it. Is there a friend or preacher or uncle or coach or neighbor that you really look up to? I sometimes think the journey is as enjoyable as the end result sometimes.jtittot. ;D
