Well calving started out a real downer, had a One and Only first calf heifer calve this morning a set of twins out of Rito 2X15 I got there with in 20 minutes of the second one hitting the ground and when I topped the ridge there were 2 coyotes having a feast and 2 others running for the trees. Just happen to have my 223 with me and managed to get 1 and the second got away in a hail of gun fire. Not a good morning.

I'm the state trapper for my area.  Maybe I can come help you next year.  I took 84 coyotes all within a 7 mile radius of our place this past Nov.  Mild winters have doubled their populations in my opinion the past couple years.  Sorry for your loss.

I guess we should have stayed at them a little harder that day....

You know we hadn't seen very much of them until about a week ago and now they are thick, I went yesterday calling and had a pair come in the first 5 minutes. Put booth of them down, moved 2 miles made another set and had 1 more respond managed to get him too. I must have gotten that 223 sighted in right because it's doing its job. The heifer was 13 days early was planning on bringing her into the calving pen this weekend where we could watch her close. Never expected twins from a first calf heifer but it happens more offend than I realized. We just don’t have twins very offend. I think the last time we had a set of twins was 8 years ago.

Did they get both of them?  You mentioned getting there as the second calf hit the ground so I thought maybe you saved it.

They had already started eating as it was coming out, or it appeared that they had. The node and ears were gone. The heifer was going in circles and there was blood strung in a 30 yard swath from her chasing the yotes. Shot another this morning and planning a ful day of calling tomorrow.

Wow...I thought the buzzards were as bad as it got. We have coyotes all over the place and have never had a bit of trouble out of them. The buzzards are a different story, though!

Good job on busting a few!!  What call are you using?  What is your setup??  Downwind of the speaker??  They have been putting a big dent in the deer population around here, and only had them come in on the calves once 2 years ago.  They need thinned around here, just wanting some tips.

My setups depend on the area or situation, I have lots better success with mouth calls and I usually have my buddy set down wind 100 yards, there are a couple of places that I use an electronic caller with a 500 yard remote, not that I ever get that far away from it but 100 yards is good, but with the e-caller I can set the cross wind in spots where there is a constant 10 to 15 MPH wind. I like sitting in front of the caller and getting them right up in my lap it makes for an interesting day. As for sounds, I really like the Zepp’s Rattler mouth call which I have probably called 80 to 100 coyotes with, I have a custom call that does just as well but unless you were here locally you couldn’t get one. As for the e-caller I have good success with the cottontail in distress or Jack in distress, also canine pups in distress, but the best is the fox vs. woodpecker which really doesn’t make a lot of sense because we don’t have  much in the way of fox around here and a woodpecker doesn’t appear to be much of a meal. Beating the yotes nose is the most important issue, but I have the best success the day or so before a storm and during it. If they are hungry they will come to get an easy meal.

This makes me sick. They got me last year. They are thick as thieves around me. I saw a cow starting to calve last year from a upstairs window. Got my bibs on, hopped in the gator, cruised up the hill with no gun of course and the yotes had the calf torn in half. They took off with the back end while momma protected the front. My buddy got walker coon dogs from the Amish that were trained to run the yotes. Bring some Gatorade. When the dogs bark, run toward them. I saw one coyote running through a field with a dog right behind it. The yote was so tired it just laid down with the dog barking at it. The chase was several miles. It was a interesting day.

Glad to see your putting a dent in them. Hang one from a tree. A old timer said it will keep the others away. I don't know if it works. But I
Liked the sounds of it. :)

Had one killed near here they thought was a coyote, turns out it was a wolf.  The link is below.  They were our coyote hunting and came up on this bad boy.  Easily twice the size of a coyote.  What do you guys think the chances of there only being one are?  We have been told for years there is no mountain lions in Kansas, even though people catch them on their trail cams all the time.  I sold a horse two years ago that was killed by a mountain lion, confirmed by the KDWP.

That's like Colorado saying there are no grizzly, but don't shoot one if you have an encounter. The wolves and the bunny hungers really have the ranchers here concerned and then you get Ted Turner bringing them in New Mexico with no control, and Colorado says you can't shoot them either. The special interest groups in this country are going to severely damage the beef industry and more than that agriculture in general.
