I am building a fitting chute for my duaghters show steer.  I have the dimesions for everything but for the bottom portion of the head chatch.  How far apart are the head catch arms to be on the bottom, I figured 10" but I would like to know for sure. If someone could tell me I would really appreciate it.  Thanks  ???

I went down and measured our steel Sullivan chute. I'll try to explain how it is put together. The actual steel that is used against the calf's neck is made of 2in O.D. pipe. The stationary bar is welded in 12inches on center in from the side. the piece on the bottom is placed approximately 15 inches up from the bottom or ground. This is kind of important B/c if that piece is too high, I have seen calves chin themselves up on that cross piece. The pivot piece which is used the squeeze, if you will, the calf's neck and hold him has 3 different possible positions. To achieve this they just drilled 3 holes through the bottom cross piece. The 3 measurements for the holes are @ 9,11,&13 inches on center from the outer edge of the chute. To make the 2in pipe be able to move well, they just took 2 pieces of flat iron and welded them to the outside of the round pipe and made them long enough so that you could easily pivot the bar. They used  a long enough bolt so that they could use a locking nut on it so that you can still move the latching bar easily. Our movable pipe is placed in the 13inches in from the side hole and has never been in any other position as far as I know if you only want to drill one hole. PM me if you have any questions & I'll try to help you out. Brent

Thank You Very Much!!!!! My pipe isn't 2" but I think it will work.  We own a snowplow business and had some old steel pipe left over from years ago from off of old salt spreaders, it is what they used for hydraulic line and is only about 3/4" in dia. Hopefully it will work o.k.  This is only our second year of showing steers and I just want something that she can work with and can work on the calf with.  If it has to be heavier I will come up with something, but beggers can't be choosers.  Thank you very much for the help.
