Haven't really ever fit a roan calf and will be fitting this heifer we raised in a couple weeks. Was wondering what tips you guys have for it, mainly just legs I am thinking about. Using any touch up paint would be pretty difficult with all the alternating color wouldn't it? Thanks in advance (I included a picture in case it helps anyone).

Use a small square of cardboard to use as a kind of guide for the edges between the red and white.  When in doubt, I just usually paint the small white bits red.  Don't make it too blocky, and try not to leave the red hair covered in white.

Just as an edit, the calf looks like pretty dang cool. And I've dressed lots of Shorthorns, and many have more wild markings than that.  Just take your time, and remember that the key to getting the red paint is several light coats, starting with the lightest paint you will be using.

Yeah I'd say that one is a lot easier than it could be. I'd go with the mentioned tip use card board or I've used index cards from wal mart or parts of feed sacks to guide you to not cover white if you can help it. If it's a small bit like on your front leg I'd paint those red.but just make sure to smooth legs up and like was mentioned don't leave white on the red. Nice calf by the way.

Thanks for the replies so far. She is actually brown and white,  the color from the sunset makes it appear red.

Don't do what I did and that was show up to the fair and have not practiced a couple of times! I messed up on my pb shorthorn heifer a couple of years ago at the state fair and it just didn't look right and no time to fix.

Calf gets better every time I see a picture of her! Mine started to shuck the brown hair and is bringing that nice blue roan color on!

Probably some good advice to get a few practices in. Thanks, this is when I had them up "on the hill" during AI season so the picture is a month and half old. She's got so much dang hair that it'll take a while to shuck it. Oh well not a bad thing I guess, hopefully can get her moved this fall. Hope to see yours next Tuesday, I think I am working the ring.

You could also just not paint her and just use primetime and tail adhesive on her and spend more time "picking". Or making sure you have all the holes filled. It will look more natural that way and like i said you just have to spend more time focusing on getting the leg full. They have to do it like that at the Ohio Best Shows. just a thought

This was my original plan. Just wasn't sure if there were any tricks to building the leg.

Oh well having lots of hair is a good thing! I'm bringing three up to the show, but only the monopoly steer will be shown. The Fsf starburst (blue roan) and the Monopoly heifer I will take to valley county. Then probably take those 3 and a couple more up to the state fair for the open jack pot show. We will see I guess haha. I'll try and attach a picture of the FSF Starburst.
