Before the time of TH and PHA testing, there was breeding of a THC with a THC. As we now know, that comes with a risk but I wanted to see what everyones experience have been with THC on a THC. It has been my opinion and others that have been in the business a long time that all the great ones are teetering on the risky side of breeding and calving and wanted to see what the risk would be on the calf and recip cows if you flushed and implanted a THC with a THC. The healthy calves should be freaky but didnt know if there was a risk out there for the recip cow besides the risk of having a TH calf. Hopefully this sparks some conversation.

Breeding carriers of a lethal defect to carriers of the same is as far away from the basic principles of cattle breeding as you can get. A good bull used to be bred to 35 of his daughtersto prove his worth to start. No wonder the show deal is another planet from the commercial side. I guess you can get some freaks but you will also bury alot of cows and calves. Maybe not half but enough that the freaks better bring freaky money. I see where your going with this but why? One great one could pay for alot of wrecks i guess. Once again, complete opposite of the real world. To each there own

Side note....I have no plans of doing so, I just thought I would put out there on a post to see what kind of discussion could develop from it.

A lot of people are doing it these days. Risky but I have seen it REALLY payoff. A couple calves I think of off the top of my head. Walks alone x sliver 159 promo bull for boysel and garwood.. m lazy heart had a mono x heat wave sell for 20k+... goet has a smilin bob out of a carrier cow that looks really good... Hunter bros seemed to do it with mono x heat seeker cross. There are many other people who get along fine with it.

I find this an interesting topic. I would not want to do this intentionally but i bet many are.  The great calves and  bulls are usually THC which means they got it from one parent but that parent doesn't pass it on to every calf. So if you got a THC bull and THC cow there is a 25% chance the  calf could be affected. I could go back to my old genetics class books but I actually think the chance is less than that to have one infected. There are a lot of THC animals out there, but yes your question is great, are there people knowingly and willingly to breed THC to THC.  I bet there are a lot of people out there rolling the dice and will take the chance to lose a cow or calf for a 20k calf. Not right in my mind but there is a lot of money in this business as there are in any other big business.

There were may flushes of two TH carriers, before anyone knew anything about the defect. Personally, I have never intentionally flushed two carriers but I did two flushes using two TH carrier buls and had pregnancies due when I found out these bulls were carriers. I got very lucky. I had 6 ET calves from the one flush and I got 6 heifers. 5 of the 6 were TH free and 1 was a carrier. The 5 heifers averaged $6000 as calves and I still have the carrier. She has had 4 natural calves of which 3 were clean and 1 was a carrier... who was a bull and he went into the deep freeze. This year I decided I better use her as a recip and she has a ET calf due next spring The other flush I had to a carrier bull resulted in 4 calves born. Two heifers and two steers. Both steers were TH carriers and the 2 females were clean. All 4 were PHA free. I had 5 more embryos left from this flush and was debating if I should toss them out. I ended up putting them in one of my online embryo sales and I made it perfectly clear that the sire was a double carrier. I doubted if anyone would bid on them but they sold for $450 each or $2250.

I know there are several breeders that still have embryos from carrier sires and dams. If you like to gamble, you could probably buy them cheap. If you get a clean calf you could have a breeding piece. On the other hand, there are so many other clean choices I reaally don't know why anyone would do this.
