We have used several gelbvieh bulls to produce balancer females.  My personal favorite is FHG Exclusive- yes I have seen him and know how ugly he is, but his offspring are not that ugly.  Trust me, I about kicked my husband out when he started breeding to him, but the calves are really good.  If you aren't worried about carcass traits you could try Mach one, Dar Nationa, etc. 

According to some studies a gelbvieh/hereford cross is the most profitable from a feedlot standpoint- just FYI

Fluffer, thanks!! I'll look 'em up. BTW, ya think that a BWF F1 cross would work out with a Gelbvieh bull? Hey, I might be on to something..... :D Yes, I have read lots about how great the Gelbviehs are for improving feedyard qualities and have also heard that they make fair mommas. I'm located in central Colorado.Thanks again.

Then you need to take the day off school on march 24 and go to the Leachman sale in Colorado.  It really opens your eyes to the cattle industry.  There was one guy there last year that needed 40 some bulls.  That is a lot of cows!  It is just a good experience.  Good luck to you!

Sorry bout dropping the ball on that list. We ultrasounded bulls last night so I've been busy compiling paperwork and getting our sale catalog online. You can check our website at www.prairiehillsgelbvieh.com for some ideas though :) I'll shoot that list as soon as I get a chance.

Klintdog, Nice bulls!  MYT Farms, reading that catolog reminded me one of my favorite bulls to use for the show side of things was SPUR Beretta.  We stopped using him when we quit showing and started working on our carcass traits, but I have 2 daughters of his in production and they are outstanding.  IF you go to that website I gave you earlier there will be a red cow and calf.  That is my beretta daughter that I showed a bunch as a first calf heifer, and that is her calf standing by her.  She weans off a big calf like that every year and calves every 365 days.  I bet she only weights 1250 too.  Her calves always wean off around 750 or so with no creep.

Thanks, need 2 or 3? :) I was actually going to suggest that Fighting Irish bull of ours as an option. He's probably the hairiest Gelbvieh bull I've ever seen - his son in Denver had 4-5 inch hair over his whole body. Beretta has taken a major hit on his carcass EPD's though, so Irish isn't too strong in that area. His daughters are plain awesome momma's though. His calves averaged 81 pounds at birth and weaned at 732 (bulls and heifers combined). The great thing is that we only use him on heifers, so that's pretty sound production right there!

I know for the most part gelbvieh cattle don't have hair, but my beretta daughter was really hairy and I also (Believe it or not) had an Exclusive bull that I showed in Louisville that was loaded with hair.  He was out of a Freedom Daughter so maybe that is where he got the hair.

You raised a bull called Pegasus (SP?) didn't you several years ago?

Nope, Pegasus came from M&P Gelbvieh - Mark Goes, out of Odell, NE.

Hmm, your prefix looks fimiliar to me but I can't figure out what I am thinking of?  Did you have a heifer in the NAILE that did well a few years ago?  What am I thinking of  ???  :)

Our prefix is PHG, the folks that raised Pegasus use PMG (Peggy & Mark Goes).
