I was disappointed in the sale at Fort Worth.  Animals seemed to sale cheap to me.  Only one had its PHA and TH status told and it sold very well.  I know one of the reasons for the sale not bringing a great deal, the sale was dumped in a lap of a friend of mine, because the person who was to organize it and handle the ads and all came down with cancer and the whole thing came to my friend in mid- November.  He says it will all go better next year.

I enjoyed seeing the animals.  There are some real good ones there.  I watched some of the Angus breeding stock show.  I hated to miss the show of the Maines on Sunday but I cannot be at two places.  I met many people that I had corresponded with or bought cattle from and had a great time.  Zane and Traci from ZNT are a lovely (beautiful) couple with a precious (very beautiful 3 year old daughter.)  Jack Jabara (Telos) likes to talk as much as I do and we had a great time together.  Mike Morris (I think he is the 7th Mike Morris) had some great cattle and is a wonderful young man.  His father and helpmate are great people too.  Calvin Fryar and Jerry Gibson (from whom I have purchased cattle) were great to visit with.  Calvin and Mike Morris's father were among the group of cattlemen who went on a trip together to look at Maines and imported the first FB bull to the USA.  Eddie Moore and his wife are in charge of the Texas young people in the Texas Maine association and are a very lovely couple.  Brent Langman was much younger than I thought from his voice on the phone and has a ALI son that is the real deal (ELE Tyson).  Had I the money he would have been mine.  Speaking of bulls, I told Traci the some objected to buying a bull by the name of "Triple X" but they got the name from his sire, "Hard Core."  I feel the Core family named him after them did not have the sex oriented stuff in mind, but who knows.  I told her if anyone asked she could tell them he was named after large clothes, Triple X for us big guys.... she laughted.  I am going to see some of his offspring in March and will report back to those who are looking for good bulls with calving ease.  Their sale is March 30th.

I met other people whose names now escape me, but they loved their cattle and it shows as they will tell you all about them.... I loved it....

I would have loved to have gone - but we're at home getting steers and our commercial heifers ready for next week.  That plus I'm down with the flu.  Tomorrow is going to busy.

What a great time I had at Fort Worth today. Joe Boy it fun talking to you and discussing cattle. I found myself maybe talking too much too but oh well. Also got to finally meet XXCC in his flesh and blood. He brought a great string of cattle down form Montana and is truely one of the most progressive breeders of Maine Anjou genetics.

ZNT brought 3 really exceptional heifers and sold 2 in the sale. We had some discussion about Tiple X and how his first set of calves look. He is appearing to be the real deal when it comes to calving ease, so far mid 70 lbs., with calves having a really nice look. With so many bulls being promoted my thoughts are to let his offspring do the talking. Red has a bull calf by him and hopeful she will share in his progress with us.

Chambero, will be rooting for a  steer that ZNT bred. Hope to see you there. I'll try not to get into some kind of heated debate.

The sale was definitely hit/miss it seemed.  I was happy we entered the sale and am happy about who our heifers sold to.  I'm excited to see how they perform down the road.

Joe Boy, it was so nice meeting you ~ You definitely made me laugh (a LOT!!).  I married into this business and the PEOPLE are a lot of what I like about it.  We're off to the show ~ Only have one heifer left to show today, so that's nice!!

Brent Langman's ELE Tyson was my favorite bull too. He also had ELE Sassafras which was my favorite heifer in the barn.

Well we finally made it home from Ft. Worth.  Loading out there just takes forever.  It was a great experience this year, and there is nothing that can replace all the new friendships we made, and the chance to catch up with our old friends.  Our heifers both brought in the $2K range.  Of course like everyone, we would have liked more, but considering how the sale went this year, and how the sale has historically gone, we are satisfied.  It's 2 heifers off the feed bill, and room for more calves coming in this spring.

Thank you to everyone that stopped to say hi, and I hope to see y'all later this spring.  See everyone at the Houston Open.  Cambero, I'll see you later this week at the steer show.

I still say anyone is doing just fine when they are selling cattle for over $2,000 a head.  We all ought to be quite proud of that.  I know we spend a lot of money trying to do that, but its a whole lot more than they bring in a sale barn or satellite auction.

Chambero,

You're absolutely right.  And we were one of the "lucky" sellers in that range. We saw many of the heifers get hammered ($800 range).  We're very grateful and glad we went!!

My wife and I went down to Ft Worth Saturday evening.  Didn't make the sale, but were able to attend the Maine-Anjou show yesterday.  Both the numbers and quality of the cattle were exceptional.  This was only my second trip to the Ft Worth show, and my first national open show to watch in eight years.  The thing I noticed most, as far as change, was the quality of the grooming and fitting. A less than expertly fitted calf stuck out like a sore thumb.  This was the first time ever for me to see a Fullblood Show, even though I've seen many fullblood calves, cows and bulls through the years.  I was impressed, but was surprised at how little change has occured in the fullbloods over the last 15 or so years.

I saw Brent Langman, but didn't have an opportunity to visit with him.  Don't remember seeing him since Glen Ferris's funeral in 1993.  We were able to spend some quality time with our good friends the Joey Fambro family.  Our younger daughter and thier older were quite the pair at many Nat. Jr. shows.  I got to have a short visit with Fred Nessler, always a mighty dapper dresser.  John Boddiker took time out of his busy day to find us and ask about our daughters.  No matter what you think about him, he cares about the breed, and even more about the breeders.

The best part of the day was seeing what a great job the Blackwell family is doing with "our" cattle.  They are having fun, and planning to attend their first Jr. National this Summer in Kansas City.  It was a great day in Ft. Worth, TX

P.S. The new Cabelas is incredible!!!

Cabela in FW is more akin to Mecca in my mind.  I drive by it every day to work.  That costs me a whole lot of money.

I think I have recovered from the Jr show and the open show back to back.  I had one Maintainer in the sale and although was not the best went really low.  I agree that it was handed to the man and had a late start.  Really good cattle and a good crowd but I think only a few bidders.

I met a lot of people and talk with ZNT a lot.  They are really good people and if any one is looking for a calf I would recommend them as honest and good stock.  It was my first open and had five head, learned I needed more help next time.  For those who only play in the junior show, you should do it once.  Even though it is playing with the big boys and girls it is different.  I really enjoyed it.  Even if ones cattle is not a 1st or 2nd, one should go and see where you need to improve and see where you want to take your herd.  You can learn a lot from the big breeders by just watching and listening to their group.  Pick up a few tips from watching the Buck Cattle Co. group.  Even with my little herd I did not feel out of place.  Honestly after see the great cattle it makes you either to want to quit or do what it takes to move up the line next time.  Now after sleeping in my truck because of the impending ice storm that did not materialize and not getting much sleep, I thought it was crazy to keep doing this.  But, then when I got into the ring for the first time in 20 years I was hooked again and ready to roll.  Even if the ladies just did ok I know where my program needs to go.

I think we are not too far off, maybe not have a winner in every class but we can get the ones we have to where they need to be.  Need to change the feeding program is what I learned the most.  Also, for some reason after showing 4 of the 5, my kids ages 8 and 10 are doing a better job in the ring than I thought.  So maybe now I will not be so critical of them, ok maybe back off a little.  Again if you never done it should be done at least once.

Again thanks to AAOK and his wonderful wife for driving down to see us.  Thanks to ZNT for talking to us.

Clint - THANK YOU!!!  We really enjoyed talking with you and I think you gave me a lot of excitement for Natalie showing in a few years.  Okay, so she's showing at Houston, but that's not quite the caliber of Ft. Worth.  It was a great experience despite the lack of sleep and tough competition.  You had some really nice heifers and we're really glad you stepped out into the Open deal for a few days!!  See you soon!!

I grew up in the city showing steers and heifers. At 55, I have always partnered on cattle deals, buying and selling with many different people. It was not until I meet Zane and Traci of ZNT Cattle that I really understood what really honorable people could actually be like. They gave me my life back when I meet them because they came to the rescue after a bad deal with some undesirable cattle rustlers (to say it nicely). Zane really knows his cattle and is keen to breeding and picking out the good ones. They have become my best friends. Their daughter Natalie  is only 4, but appears to have the cow business and showing in her bones. In a short time she will be the one to watch out for in the showring.

Oh, I almost forgot. Good luck with your steer at Fort Worth. Can't wait to see how he does.
