both sides need to offer choice.  neither system works.

condoms, condones.  abstinence denies reality.

in the long run, women more help from being brainwashed.

India plans to tighten laws against sati, the ancient custom of widows burning themselves alive, by holding entire communities responsible and increasing penalties to up to life imprisonment, officials said on Tuesday.

Sati -- where widows jump onto their husband's funeral pyres -- was first banned by Britain's colonial rulers in 1829 and laws strengthened most recently in 1987 but rare cases still occur in parts of India.

i guess in one respect, this tradition is "conservative".  getting rid of the "diversity" of sati would be good.  so was the brain eating tradition of another culture.

I received an email today, in which it said that " all whites in the US were supposed to gather in the cotten fields at 5 am for "orientation" . It also said that you were supposed to be prompt because whippings would commence at 5:05 for later arrivals. It was signed by President - Elect Obama.... Not sure why I got the email as I live in Canada,so I hope I am not in trouble as I decided not to show up at the cotten fields. Did anyone else get the memo and did you go to the orientation????

here's that "guy" in the neighborhood.

http://www.thestar.com/article/533244

In a robust and sophisticated democracy (with no opposition), political leaders – and all of us – ought to seek ways to talk with many people who hold dissenting, or even radical, ideas (and convert them so there will be no diversity). Lacking that simple and yet essential capacity to question authority, we might still be burning witches and enslaving our fellow human beings today. (why not question this fool AND obama?  this guy is still a terrorist, albeit a softer one, this guy has NO tolerance or business being a teacher)

Maybe we could welcome our current situation – torn by another illegal war, as it was in the '60s – as an opportunity to search for the new.(dont' save anyone from communism)

Perhaps we might think of ourselves not as passive consumers of politics, but as fully mobilized political actors.(actors? as oppossed to what?)

Perhaps we might think of our various efforts now, as we did then, as more than a single campaign, but rather as our movement-in-the-making.(and get rid of diversity and worship man)

We might find hope in the growth of opposition to war and occupation worldwide.(so get rid of the occupation of america?)

Or we might be inspired by the growing movements for reparations and prison abolition (he means consequences), or the rising immigrant rights movement(he means vote dilution of citizens) and the stirrings of working people everywhere (as oppossed to non-union members ornon-working people, and who would they be?), or by gay and lesbian and transgender people courageously pressing for full recognition.(they have it, they can't use the word of an organization they despise, where's the tolerance for that?)

Yet hope – my hope, our hope – resides in a simple self-evident truth: the future is unknown, and it is also entirely unknowable.

History is always in the making. It's up to us. It is up to me and to you. Nothing is predetermined. That makes our moment on this Earth both hopeful and all the more urgent – we must find ways to become real actors, to become authentic subjects in our own history.

In this time of new beginnings and rising expectations, it is even more urgent that we figure out how to become the people we have been waiting to be.

(hmm, wonder where obama got that quote????)

Bill Ayers is a distinguished (NOTTTTT) professor of education and senior scholar (of suicide) at the University of Illinois at Chicago. This is a condensed version of an essay that first appeared in In These Times (www.inthesetimes.com).

any parent who sends their kids to this school needs to request a little more diversity.  they aren't getting it.

diversity, so rare these days.

I got a text message from a friend who is a yellow dog, It said "there are tearing out the rose garden and puttin' in a watermelon patch". I found this odd from a Hilary supporter and someone who voted for Obama. Is it okay for these supporters to make black jokes? I thought it was in very poor taste for someone who voted for Obama. I guess that is some of the change that is to come.

You all can call me crazy, but I'd say that is in poor taste no matter who a person voted for. Is it okay for any one to make black jokes, or jokes about any other group of people who may be stereotyped or perceived to be different or look different than you or I, no matter what you or I happen to look like? I don't think so, but apparently I am a little more PC than most of my buddies who have been sending me that stuff throughout the election process. Those kind of text and email fwds are blatantly racist, no matter what spin you try to put on them. The xmas tree ornament one was even mentioned on another thread here on the Planet, which stops beating around the bush and just goes ahead and throws out the N word. I lost a lot of respect for a lot of ppl over this post election fwd crap. Voting for whoever you want b/c of whatever views and policies that they may have or support or denounce or whatever is the wonderful American way. Dragging the country backward supporting racist stereotypes and tendencies and making jokes about things like hanging blacks from trees because the election didn't turn out to your liking is certainly not.

in reality, white jokes are ok by anybody, anytime, anywhere, anyplace.

when we have equality, it will be the same for everyone.  the notion that we are going to eliminate jokes is just a plain joke.

that said, i don't make it a practice to make racial jokes, and to me, even though i understand words have more meaning than one should legally be required to keep track of, the touchiness of one side versus the other is a little tiring and keeps me from seeking diversity, as the "other" sides are, in my view, more recalcitrant to change as evidenced by the extremely long list of special crimes and translations.  even that last comment is seen by many as racist.  telling me it is doesn't convince me it is, no matter how much diversity is crammed down my throat and ripped from my wallet.

Quoting this statement from my post should answer your first question knabe. I don't think it's an ok thing to do, no matter what group is joking about what other group. Racism or any other kind of bigotry or predjudice goes both ways for sure. I guess a person could view political correctness as a terrible left wing conspiracy against free speech or whatever, but I support it because it just plain goes along with the good morals and values that my mama taught me. It's just about being nice, not judging a book by its cover, treating others the way that I'd like to be treated, etc

I don't support it.  doesn't mean i'm a racist.

comedians would lose an awful lot of material.

the anti-intellectual whatever race bias is probably more harmful within a community than any professional outrage from outside a community.

i understand what you are saying.  i'm just not ready to be perfect.

here's something interesting.

my legal status has just been devalued.

http://www.judicialwatch.org/blog/2008/nov/judge-ban-use-illegal-and-aliens

Arizona’s Supreme Court chief justice has agreed to enforce the Hispanic Bar Association’s demands of banning the terms “illegal” and “aliens” in all of the state’s courtrooms.

Claiming that the terms are inflammatory, the president of Arizona’s Hispanic Bar Association, (known as Los Abogados) has asked state Supreme Court Chief Justice Ruth McGregor to stop using them at trials or hearings because they create perceptions of judicial bias.

In a strongly worded letter to the chief justice, Los Abogados’ president says attaching an illegal status to a person establishes a brand of contemptibility, creates the appearance of anti-immigrant prejudice and tarnishes the image of courts as a place where disputes may be fairly resolved.

It further points out that no human being is illegal and that a national Hispanic journalism association has roundly criticized the reference for dehumanizing a segment of the population. The letter goes on to criticize the state’s High Court for using the term “illegals” in at least two opinions and the term “illegal aliens” in dozens of others.

It concludes with a list of acceptable and unacceptable terms relating to illegal immigration. Among those the group wants banned are; immigration crisis, immigration epidemic, open borders advocates, anchor babies and invaders. Among the acceptable terms are foreign nationals, unauthorized workers and human rights advocates. Click here to see the entire list as well as Chief Justice McGregor’s promise to enforce the requests.

i guess what this means is that there is NO SUCH THING AS LEGAL.  typical.  only 60% of illegals are hispanic calling someone an illegal only refers to illegal hispanics.

forget the jokes, the above is discrimination of following the rules.

Call me silly, but having a Hispanic Bar Association is discrimination, what was wrong with the regular ole American Bar Association??

i'm more concerned with enforcing "demands" rather than the "law".

this is worse than racist jokes. it's racist policy.

Unless the Mexicans mutate into some sort of Latinosaur, I think a Jurassic Park-esque fence might work.  How would you power it though? Solar Power? Who's going to put it up and maintain it?

I have heard a lot of black people making jokes about how it will be w/ Obama in the White House. I could list a few, but. Is it okay for black people to use these same jokes?

About the fence. Mexicans are very good diggers. They have already dug tunnels into the U.S.

Another thing about the N-word. It originated from the country Niger so people from Niger were called Ni#@ers. Kinda like Germans from Germany, Italians from Italy, etc.................. Although I don't think it is appropriate to use. I think black people have help keep this word alive by using it themselves.

People are way to PC. Everyone needs to lighten up. Listen to Lisa Lampanelli and just laugh. Before her act is on T.V. is says" This material is very offensive, don't tell anyone how much you enjoyed it."

I have tried to stay out of the political conversations but I have a story to share. The other day while at the grocery store two people of color were discussing the election results in front of me. They were joking about Obama putting 20 inch rims on the presidential limo, what they would spend their reparations on, and that white people would finally know what it is like to pick cotton. I found the last remark funny because I am sure they had never been to a farm or would even know what cotton looks like. The most disturbing thing was one of the gentlemen said he didn't know or care anything about Obama except he was black so that was who he was going to vote for. Should voting really be a right we all have. It is really scary that people like these gentlemen helped mold the future of our nation. Voting and having children are two of the most important things you can do but require no education or regulation to participate in.
