Yeah, but get a bigger one cause you will always want to plug in a butt fan, clippers and all that at one point or another, PLUS, when you get the good ole' ice storm and out of power at the house or barn it will in the middle of calving or they will be worried about the meat in the freezer.

Thank you for all of your help, our barn does not have power and I will only need it for the blower and clippers. All of the other barns (calving) have power, they are just too far from the house, so I won't need one that will power the house. Thank you, and what is a resonable price for a used one that is in good condition and few hours?

I run an equipment rental store in Oklahoma and we rent generators all the time. If I was going to buy one based solely on life of the machine, the easy winner is a Tsurumi. They have Honda engines and are built like a tank. I would go for either the 4500 watt or the 6000. For the difference in size and weight I would go ahead and get the 6000, not much difference other than a little coin.

I bought a used Husky brand 5000 watt continuous power, 6250 on startup..... with 2 hours on it, for $400.  If you'll be patient and watch craigslist, you'll get one at a good price.

I have two Honda generators and love them but if I were just buying a generator for the barn and wasn't worried about how loud it was I would watch Craigslist to find a cheap one.  We have friends that have a Coleman that is really loud but they have used it for years with no problem.  I bet you can find a decent generator on CL for $300 if you are patient.

You can get the Black Max or something like that at Sam's Club for $600 or $700 brand spanking new.  Don't know how many hours they will run, but should be at least as reliable as a lawn mower.

I know a lot of people have been buying the cheap Champion brand Chinese generators from Costco and running their RV's etc with them.

They appear to have Honda "knock off" engines on them and from what I have heard they seem to give decent service.

This is a cheap alternative and definitely not the cadilac!

Like most things Chinese, consider it to be disposable so you don't dissapoint yourself.

Try searching the RV forums, I think you will find more info there.

I have an old engine drive miller welder that also has a 3500 watt generator built into it, it powers my blower and whatever else just fine but pretty heavy to horse around to go to shows etc.

Back home we bought a 6500 watt Coleman around 10 years ago on sale at Walmart, like somebody else said, it's loud but it does the job.

I have a PTO powered generator that we used to run the milk barn.  I think it is 25 KW.  We also have a little honda that is small enough to put on an ATV and move.  I use it around the farm all the time.  Cordless power tools are okay for a little repair but for real work you better have a cord or power close and multiple batteries.  It works for me.  When I wired the house I put a disconnect that allows me with a flip of the switch to run off the generator.  It really works quite well.
