Hello!  Does anyone know if you can overdose a show steer on glucosamine or MSM? If feeding glucosamine pills and MSM capsules together or seperatley is there a reccomended dosage in millagrams or ounces? I am not feeding a glucosamine steer supplement but was wondering if I bought pills/capsules from a health store or a place like walmart what a dosage would be to where it would actually make a difference in a 750lb calf and what would be too much. Thanks in advance!!

I have never done it and maybe someone else on here has but in the horse section there is powdered msm to be fed to them. I know in horses we have fed several supplements at the same time for joints. Cannot tell you for sure on cattle tho. If you dont get a for sure answer on here ask a vet. They will be able to tell you. You also have to remember that a cow is a food animal and need to look at if any withdrawal. Just throwing out ideas.

Okay, our end show is not until Late july but for the time being I  just wanted to check how much I could give them millagrams wise or ounces wise. I know most supplements if not all have their reccomended dosage labels and scoops etc to measure but if not feeding a brand name glucosamine product is anyone knew of a max or minimus dosage for MSM or glucosamine. :)

Have you looked into the supplements designed for cattle? That sullivans or other companies offer.

Yes we have, we just have a show coming up and wanted to try something else before the show to see if it made a difference. We plan on getting them on a supplement designed for cattle in the future, yet wanted to see if we could do something with human brand capsules/pills in the meantime for a couple weeks leading up to the show. I have had friends feed wlmart glucosamine and MSM as a cheaper form prior to shows but didnt know if it is as strong as a cattle brand because it is human brand etc or dosage minimums or maximums....

You might try looking at the supplements made specifically for cattle and see if it gives you a milligram and then apply that to whatever supplement you decide to use.  I personally hate feeding supplements or anything not labeled for animal use.  We put so much time and $$ into these critters it would suck to off one of them by accident.

I looked around some on the internet last night and most of what I saw said supplements have to be fed a minimum of 30 days to really have any benefit to the animal. So if your looking for a quick fix its not pry going to happen.

Yes you can give an overdose of Glucosamine.  As far as giving the animal drugs off label or meant for humans, it is against the rules in Texas.  There are plenty of products made for Cattle.  G-Luck

There ain't a substitute for sound cattle. I would bet 1/2the posts on here are related to adding some miracle substance to some latest fad and. Shazam. I got a champion.  If you have a problem  work with it, don't invent a cure for something you may or may not have.

There is a new product called Lubrsyn if I have the spelling correct. It is for joints. We plan to start using it soon. Talked to the individuals in Denver when we were there and they explained it in great detail. We are usually not big fans of that many supplements but we are going to try.
