Hello i just picked up my show steer for an early February fair i picked him up Thursday its now Sunday and he wont seem to eat i gave him electrolytes in water first night then a paste today he's interested in food but seems to eat for 30 seconds then walks away he comes back and just kinda grazes on his grain im worried that he wont eat in future. A guess on weight is 450-500 pounds and i gave him 5 pounds tonight he left about maybe 1/4 to 1/2 pound still in bucket am i feeding too much? its only about 2% of his weight. any suggestions to how i can get him to finish his grain.

Nina if you are feeding your calf 2% right at the get go you are feeding him about double what you should IMO. You should star him out at 1% of his body wt. and slowly add from there on until you get to2 to 3% of his body wt. Once he's eating well add  a half a pound of feed mid week and then another half of a pound on the weekend, so a total of one pound per week additional feed is as fast as I would increase him. What do his droppings look like? You have a chance of foundering your steer at the rate that you were feeding him. You may want to talk to a vet about it to decide whether or not you need to treat him for acidosis. Hopefully your feed has a fair amount of roughage built into it. Good luck.
