i was wondering what everyone's opinion of his calves are.  I have a My Turn/Foreplay heifer I was thinking about breeding to him this spring.  She is very powerful and compact (should of been a steer) and was looking for a bull to stretch her out and give her calf a little more depth.  She is thick and has a lot of eye apeal.  Is a bit straight on her back legs but he looks like he has plenty of set to him.  Any pics or thoughts would be aprriciated.  Thanks!

Grizzly won't be the bull to do what you are asking for. He breeds consistant and will make good functional moderate framed calves. They all look similar. I personally could not say that he is heifer safe. We had to pull the ones that we calved and PPL that I bred for had to pull all of their's also. They come thick!!.The heifers were clubbie bred so that has a part in it also.

Agreed, that he is not the bull you need to use. He really downsized and took performance away from our cows(big northern SImmy cows). At AI time we thought they were the best calves we had, that was the best they ever looked at our place. Hope it was just the 8 cows faults, because we bred 17 more to him ;D

With that kind of pedigree I would suggest breeding her angus.  That is the safe bet.  Any power may be too much power.  That is the problem with mating up heifers, you dont know how they roll.  Get the first one out and then start playing the game.  If she was bred different I might have a suggestion for you, but for this one angus.

So is heifer safe or whats the verdict.

Think back to a year ago and how many 1st calf heifers on the sales were bred to Grizzly. Almost all of the spec heifer sales had some bred to Grizzly. Take a look @ this year's catalogs and compare. I personally haven't seen any heifers bred that way. One of 2 things, they calved harder than expected or the calves were not good enough. The calves that we had were good enough. Our top selling heifer was a Grizzly. I like the bull, but won't use him on any heifers.

We calved 10 or so heifers last year bred to him.  Only pulled one and it was plenty small enough just that it was out of my youngest smallest heifer.  They were all shorter gestation too.  I used him again on some heifers.  However, mine were all simmental X angus 1/2s and 3/4s so they would have a little more maternal calving ease then you average clubby.
