I recently purchased a show steer out of "I am Legend" and an AngusXMaine Heifer. He's a really stocky calf, roughly 650-700 lbs. I am looking to use a different feed program than I used last year with my ShorthornXHereford Steer. Is it better to start off with finish and move to grower feed, or start with grower and move to finish?

just as it sounds... you in almost every case- start with grower, as you want your calves to grow... then you switch to finisher- when you get close to end point.

If you compare grower to finsher (same brand) the grower has more protein and less than the finisher, take HSC Fitters Edge has 14% protein and 2.5% fat, the Finishing Touch is 13% protein and 5% fat. More protein for growth, more fat for finish. We have fed finisher (more fat) earlier to slow down growth on calves that looked like they could grown to big on us. Overall, follow the recommendations on the feed and you should be fine. If you think you may need to change feed at an earlier time, check with your feed guy, post pictures on here and ask for suggestions I'm sure someone can direct you on the right path.

I feed grower till weight in that is in December then go finisher till mid April then back to grower for cooler time and back to finisher if needed right around July only if needed.....I have other additives I use thru out the year but feed wise that's how I roll!
