GVC Suh: Any calf Reports?

Would love to see pictures of calves!

None on the ground yet, but we have several embryos due this fall and winter. We are very excited.

obviously unedited and born 5/8/11...moderate pull...115 pounds but I am using a spring scale for weights. I think she is pretty nice.. wouldn't use him on heifers, she is seen on side and that is her rear in the center of the picture

Just out of curiosity, I live in Montana, have both purebreds and fullbloods, these are unacceptable calving conditions to me.  Are these 'easy pull, 115# heifers' the norm? If so, why in the hell would someone want to propogate more genetics like this?  If these kind are favorable, then yes, Maine-Anjou truly should be a 'hobby' breed.

XXXC, I was as honest as I know how... Birthdate  and weight were as stated... I was a s surprised as the next guy about the weight and the need for assist.

as far as I know those scales are accurate... I bought them from Valley Vet

I will also say that I am not a very good guesser of calf weights..in regard to breed association  I  think a lot of birth weight data  is from "eyeball" weights and  I was just reporting the data... I certainly will try to pick lower birth  weight buls to mate with her

I recently posted a purebred 130 pounder out of Top Shelf... I hope it is not something I am causing with nutrition etcl

I went to a a digital scale because spring scales if the calf moves or jumps can add an extra 5-10 ibs really easy .....Had people helping me and they always didn't watch that closely , digital is mounted on 4-wheeler and locks in when got it weighed  ....To much protein can definitely add to birth weight .

I sure wouldn't overract to one Bwt report on the SP.  If Dennis raised him I'm confident the calving info pronoted is legit.

Tony,  i think Dennis is a straight up guy and certainly this one calf by herself doesn't establish a trend... I think she is kinda cool and she  is growing into herself quite nicely so far. She also seems calm and not overly excitable... similar to her mother... her mother is an older cow from the GVC fall sale...

Her mother does have a "long" face and the calf has a little of that also..

I think Pat Wolfe has some Suh calves on the ground... She might have an idea about birth weights

Doc, Keep us updated as she progresses.  I heard alot of good things about the bull and I am a fan of GVC cattle.

i don't recommend bulls that aren't proven.  a recommendation is different thant a suggestion for investigation...but i doubt you'd care to even know the difference.

looks like Pat Wolfe didn't have any problems.  Maybe jbzdad had some weather conditions that caused his cows to hork it on in the last trimester.

shoot, knabe...maybe we should flush something to the import Touchdown and see what your recommendation leads us to.  I bet you'd be willing to implant every embryo from that flush into your entire cow herd of what...? 4 1/2 cows? you go man.

Suh not being readily available to the public, what are PPL's thoughts about GVC Hawkeye? I've heard nothing but good, but have not seen him personally.

For what it's worth, Suh was one of my favorite bulls of any breed that year in Denver.  I also have a lot of respect for Dennis Garwood and I don't know Pat Wolfe but everything he's written tells me he's a breeder I'd do business with if I wanted Maine cattle.  One calf doesn't make a calving ease bull nor does it make a cow killer.

yep, am bought some Hawkeye and am using it on some narrower  bodied cows this year... was able to buy some Statesman and using it also this year

Can a person get Suh bought @ a reasonable price or is he still locked up in shares and syndication?

I think he is still locked up... heard of a guy in Texas that may sell some ... PM me if you want me to try to find the info...

was out looking at this heifer last night... she is starting to show some depth of body , seems to  be "growing into herself" nicely

you're right, i was completely out of line...I should have no opinion of knave's recommendations, experience or theories.  :-*

what does this have to do with Suh? ... it's not wise to get wild with expectations until the performance of a bull (or cow) is well proven.  8)
