If you can't grow hair without a supplement, you can't grow it with one either.  For my money, it's Epic all the way, but we've had good luck with melatonin pellets.

I should have said pills. I got them at walmart. It cost about a dollar/day to feed it.  You gotta start about 90 days out with any hair supplement to get the full results.  If you call "everything" putting the steer in the barn with fans, have you tried rinsing him 2-3 times a day, getting him in before the sun comes up, making sure the barn is dark, and wearing out a couple rice root brushes on him?

What do you mean by wire brush?  I have sometimes had trouble getting heavy steers to hair up. I think it had a lot to do with the amount of fat in the feed. It was pretty hot and just seemend to keep them from hairing up. If you have 60 days left, how much do you want that steer to weigh at fair?

More than a few Charolais-X steers just don't have much hair due to their genetics.

Grill bricks are taking your hair off.  They are great to get the dead hair off, but while you are using them its cutting even the short new hairs that might be trying to come back.  Nothing is going to get new hair back in just 60 days at this time of year.

i have good hair coming on his body but his ass is bare and thats where i want it. i bought mellatonin pills yesterday and im going to start giving it to him.  when i was doing research grow and shine and shags main product is melatonin. a guy from texas gave me the idea about the grill brick.  and is in a wire brush i mean like a brush that you use to get rust off of metal. and it has worked good for me previous years and had like two inch hair on him

I can't imagine that a wire brush would be great to grow hair. Now to get old dead hair out, I can see it being a very valuable tool.  To get that hair coming on his ass, I'd use the heck out of a rice root and a plastic scrub brush, and rinse him a couple times a day.  I still don't know how much hair you'll get, but it's worth a shot.

Neither. The active hair-growth ingredient in both of those is Melatonin. Start out feeding 5 pills in the morning, and 5 at night, and give it a week. We crushed the pills up and put them in the feed.  Now to be quite honest, the Shag has other ingredients in it that are probably beneficial to your calf, but a good mineral and a balanced feed can take care of all his needs.  We're feeding Oxy Explosion in conjunction with Epic this year, haven't started the Epic yet, but the Oxy sure does have a nice effect after about a month.

I'm very intrigued with this topic. I'm in south Florida and we have to work extra hard to keep our long hair. How many mg per feeding/Daily of the melatonin pills does each calf get. Our calves way approx. 500-600 lbs and is it ok to give to heifers? Will it effect their reproduction systems.

Thanks

Your still gonna have to work hard...it's not a free ride deal. Give them 5 in the morning and 5 in the evening. I think the one's I have are 300mg. I've never had any problems with feeding it to heifers.

You can also check out "Hair Growth 101" over in the Hall of Fame section.  There is lots of good info there.  Good luck! (thumbsup)
