I currently have CIDR's in cows and am preparing to remove them.  I was wondering what the proper protocol was for disinfecting them for use again.

Thanks

We soak and rinse them good with warm water only.  Then allow them to dry and place in large zip lock bags and store in the refrigerator.  This advice came from our Genex rep and has worked well for us the past four years.

I rinse them off in cool water, let them air dry... do not leave them soaking... NO SOAP.

If you don't have refrigerator space... keep them in a cool dry place.

I was told to dip repeatedly for 30 seconds in a hot bucket of soapy water, then repeat in a hot bucket of bleach & water.  After this air dry and put in ziplock bags.

Do I need to disinfect them with something?  Can I (being really cheap) put multiple CIDR's in one bag?

We clean them in Novasan (not sure on spelling) dry them and put them in a bag where they are out of direct light.

We were told to dip in Novalsan solution, scrub the outide, rinse off, and air dry.  We put them back in original bags or ziplocks and put in fridge till next year.  Its worked fine for us with no problems.

I've heard of re-using CIDRs but just didn't want to mess with it, but from y'alls posts it seems pretty simple. I have some late calving cows that I want to bump up and just implanted some heifers with CIDRs today. When I take the heifers' CIRDS out next week I think I'll try it.

This is why I love this forum.

This is what I do.  I also put them back in the same cow.  This is probably overkill, but my wife(who's a nurse and is currently going back to school to be a nurse practitioner) won't let me do it any other way.  She explained  why but I did the selective hearing thing and just did what I was told.  (lol)

How many times does everyone reuse them?  We've been told they are good for 2 times.  Also, how do you mark the used ones so you can tell them apart from teh new ones when they come out?

We reuse them once and have a large red X on the bag that has the one use CIDR's.  It is my understanding the ones from Canada can be reused 2 times.

After we take them out and clean them we tie a tight knot in the blue plastic tail. That way we know to throw that one away after its second use.
