I may be wrong, but I thought I read somewhere that Hannibal is (or was) homozygous black and homozygous solid patterned.  I have recently seen pictures of 2 different red calves that were advertised as Hannibals, and one of the was stocking legged.  Was I wrong about the homo black and solid?

I THINK that Manchild has a solid color pattern. That's from memory, I didn't look him up. Having a solid roan calf out of a shorthorn cow would not DQ that as roan color pattern is not spotting. Also I can say that I have had several Hannibal calves with cows with LOTS of white on them and as of yet have yet to see the first spot. I can't even get a blaze or a belly. But as to your question, I think there would be a mistake in the sire of the calves if they are red. Several of the ones here have that "baby brown" hair that sheds off, but they are black.

The pictures I am refering to are of show winners, so the baby fuzz is not an issue.  I  am with you in that I have bred him to cows that were marked up like Holsteins and got solid black calves along with blaze faces.  I just thought it was an interesting observation, and was wondering if anyone else had ever noticed it too.

But he is out of a Charolais cow.  They have a diluter gene that causes the smoke color.  Even a purebred angus on a charolais will throw smokes.  The black gene is dominant to red.  Shorthorn white and Charolais white genes don't follow the basic dominant/recessive patterns.
