Every breed has their own genetic traits which are more dominant in one breed over another.  i.e. performance, maternal, carcass value, ruggedness in hot arid geographic regions, etc.  It is the cattleman to choose which traits and breeds he/she wants to use in their herd, depending on the goals for your program.

Gelbvieh cattle do not have as much "inside lower rear quarter muscle" as some other breeds.  Therefore, Gelbvieh do not normally work well when breeding for club calves, or to make club calf mama cows, in comparison to some other cattle breeds.  IMHO

i remember some old fullblood gelbvieh's that had plenty of lower, inner quarter, specifically a bull called cowboy that did as well as some fullbloods that van horn used to have that sold out and were converted to blacks and probably lost near san luis obispo california in the late 80's.

We had Cowboy daughters as well as daughters of several of the other older fullblood gelbvieh bulls.  They were good as far as mama cows but I think they would be far too big for today's club calf market.  The modern gelbviehs in my opinion suck!  Good luck finding gelbvieh genetics produced in the last 15 years that have anything to offer to any part of the beef industry.  Gelbvieh is another breed that flushed all of the good they had down the toilet in search of polled and black! Way to go Gelbvieh! (clapping)

From what I have seen the tried and tested model is a cross that picks up some Maine, Angus, Simi and sometimes a little Chi or Shorthorn.  The percentages vary but the combination is one that works.  Meyer and Who as a combination seems to work with some repeatability.  The missing link in most of the clubby world getting consistency.

Had a chance to work on this Balancer gelbvieh bull this year and I think he will work on about any kind of cow, moderate 5.0,  massive,  sound, and a big ol butt!!  seen his first calves and they were cool and 75-80lbs

Nice Balancer bull.  He aint no purebred though.  That's what I mean, the Gelbvieh breed has evolved to the point where they need other breeds crossed into it to make them worth a crap.

It's not just the Gelbvieh breed.  Look at the other Continental breeds.  They ALL have Angus crosses.  Have they changed their mission.

Most of the other registries have been registering more hybrids that purebreds.

If you want to try a Galloway also look at Welsh Black.  Alta Genetics has a Welsh Black Bull called CARW GLYN ULTIMATE 66U that I think would work with Maine Genetics.  Look him up on their website: http://www.altabeef.com/SireDirectory/
More Welsh Black and Galloway Cattle, a bull sale catalog: http://www.kaiserscelticcattle.com/kaiser2010.pdf

Since someone else mentioned Galloway, I thought I would throw my 2 cents in.  We have semen available on this bull.

To Bas:  I would need to know some details and info on your Maine Cow.  i.e.

1. Frame size
2. Depth of body and rib
3. Ease of fleshing
4. Milk and udder
5. Front end
6. Amount of thickness
7. How structurally correct, is she straight on her legs
8. What has she been bred to in the past and how did those matings work

We had good luck breeding some of our GelbviehxAngus cows to clubbies.  Had three different steers that were pretty good, one by Heatseeker and two by Heatwave.  These were really solid county fair type steers, not freaky jackpot calves though.  These Balancer cows were also from older Gelbvieh genetics, as others have mentioned the "newer" genetics are not as good.  Agree with that, they have bred most of the good Gelbvieh qualities out trying to achieve the black and polled factor.  Two of our three steers mentioned above were red and one was black. Also had a good Sunseeker heifer out of a Balancer cow (grey) that is a great cow herself.
