heifer looks good.  reminds me of cumberlands.

if she stays that way, breed her to a cleaner made jazz son who is clean or to a half sib with different mother or to another leroy son with or something with bonanza or buster.

Hiefer is the type I like-and if she stays that type, which I bet she does-Id put something like Daybreak Express-or even Gator(FHF Rodeos Hope- llegit LOW BW-grandson of Highfield Hope). Youd have low Bw to high weaning- yearling spread-and definitely an outcross deal that would show. O0

Not to worry-if AHL Ruby looks and produces like Im guessing she does-then you can send her our way-Ill suffer along anyday with cows like that O0

I think I'll hold on to her, Mark- here's a pic of her Vanguard sired heifer calf born 3/5. 81lb bw

Saskvalley Bonanza 219M would be a good option for her. She looks like she is gonna have plenty of size. Coalpit Creek Leader 6th X would be another one that would click on her type I would be. Captain Obvious I think would also click. Bulls that are masculine more compact on that female I think would make fantastic calves. Nice heifer prospect.

Nice calves! It looks like he is doing a good job for you! Sure is nice to have vigorous calves isn't it? I've seen a large range of vigor on calves depending on sire.

It really is something to see the vigor these calves have- they are up running across the pasture within hrs of being born.  One of the perks of the Canadian cattle I believe.  Vanguard crosses really well with the smoother flatter(muscle) feminine made cows from Lovings and the JSF influence type- that was kind of what I envisioned when I bought him: cross him on cows that need more substance. He's looser structured, soggy bull w/ a huge hip and that's exactly what the commercial type shorthorn needs.  You put  him over the typical Waukaru type cow for example- that's the home run right there.  Inject the growth and substance from Vanguard and then use those type cows to clean up the bottom line, slick em off, and ya know-refine them a little and I don't know if you could ask for more.  I will be leaning that way when the Vanguard daughters come into production- something like KL, Waukaru, or the Buckshot bull some have been talking about lately-  something slick hided and a little more angular.

Here's a video of the type of cow I'm talking about- this calf is about 2 hrs old here: http://youtu.be/Qz4ccI1-O3g

and then a video of some 2 week old calves playing around:

Vanguard changes them alot like Ecodale Topdraft did at Deertrail-and the cows at that time would have been very similar in type to what you are writing about:and Kieth Lauer used some Awesome and Desperado sons.-Great looking calves-and having Last Call in the pedigree is also way cool to me-very few progeny due to bad semen down here. But he was a very impressive calf in enver-real crowd pleaser. One of the better female makers out of Lauers and Lovings record low bW sire would be Arsulu Osage-they have some thickness and certainly depth of rib-but still retain a little of the Gold look-which starts looking dual to me in some cases. I think you have something special here with this bull. He's has a great pedigree and those calves looked awesome. Thick calves with lots of muscle. Not only that but a lot of those calves are fairly showy looking, good bone and hair. Who says you can't have a maternal bull that can compete in the show ring!

I'm happy to hear he is doing a nice job for you. I like the looks of his calves you have had this year. By the short calving season it looks like he wasn't bothered too much by the 1200 + mile move to a much warmer climate. I hope the calves continue to get better with age!

On another note, on your Vanguard bull, I really like Major Leroy's dam, the Prairie Lane Sparkle cow, it seems like she has had a lot of good ones from the pictures I have seen on here and I really the picture of her. Also, I'm a big fan of the Diamond Captain Mark 27C bull that is on the bottom side of your bull. We bought 5 units of semen on Captain Mark a couple years ago, really looking forward to using it in the coming years.

Vanguard is a double bred 27C.  27C sired both of Vanguard's grandams- Prairie Lane Sparkle and New Beginnings Elsie's Jade.  From what I can tell, these are great cattle.  I'm pretty sure Diamond took the 27C semen off the market. If you ever want to get rid of it let me know, I would use it in a heartbeat. I think he would be dynamite over some proud jazz daughters.

I remember someone asked on here a few years ago who the top 10 shorthorn bulls of all time were. The 27C bull was mentioned a few times, JIT was very high on him I believe. He is an outcross to all of the "popular" shorthorn sires down here. We had a cow bred by Carl Venable that we wanted to flush to 27C, but unfortunately she was injured at 13 getting rode by another cow when she came in heat and had to be put down.

We got 4 embryos from her and Vortec, down to 3 as the first one didn't take. Expecting a calf from that mating in August. We are hoping that mating will really work, and it's a female! If so, we plan to flush the offspring of them to 27C.

Here are the pedigrees of Vortec and our cow.

Everyone knew I repeatedly commented about how good the calves were, provided they weren’t 120+ pounds or provided you could actually get them out alive.  He probably had 75 calves for me of which over 20 were pulled-  and not a single one out of heifers.  That r w m heifer pictured I shot with a 3030 after she thought best place to take her and hip locked calf were out in the middle of the pond.

The vendetta as you call it started when the breeder attempted to disassociate himself from any results like these.  I went and did my own research to find out that birth weights and experiences like mine were not the exception rather they were the norm.  Not only in dealing with JIt in general, but more importantly with dealing with these genetics specifically.
