Once the ideal calf is discovered.......the perfect steer that no one can beat.......and he is cloned year after year after year......why would people even go through the motions of a show anymore? Next we will have people trying tos steal a chunk of ear off a calf late at night so they can clone him.

To show at majors in Texas you have to nose pring and DNA them, this had to be done over the summer for shows coming in the spring.  Its really no big deal.  I really cant see anyone having a barn full of the same clone, mainly because different judges are going to want different things in cattle.  The people serious enough and with enough money to have a barn full of clones are looking at Judges lists(or listening to judges prospects) and trying to put a calf in the barn to meet each judges needs, so they arent likely to have a barn full of the same thing.  I think this is a prime example, and I may have just overlooked it, but I dont see where the allegation claims this steer won AkSarBen, just that he was shown there, again I may have overlooked it.  But, I dont think the clone idea would be that big of an issue.  I think an idea like the majors in Texas would work, if you want to show in Louisville and rule is you have to own by so many days before then, then they should issue Tags, tag has to be in steers ear by ownership deadline, send in a form with pic of calf with tag in ear, nose print, and DNA sample.  There is no problem with the steer winning shows prior to Louisville, as long as the steer wins under the same kid each time!

can we clone the showman as well?  i mean there's always controversy there too.  and while we're at it, lets clone the judge as well.

We use retinal scans for the Colorado State Fair and yes that would be the easiest and simplest identification. Never thought about it but that would put an end to all questions. Colaberating all of the info from across the country would require some organization and cost, but doesn't everything?

I get it - so the same kid with the same calf can be everywhere - in time for nomination.  Have to clone the rest of the crew, too, so they can look exactly alike...

Still wouldn't win everything.

Sorry, chiming in a bit late:

DNA Tests are very simple.  And when you are testing one or two animals, it goes rather quickly.  There are a number of labs.  When I had an heifer I wanted tested for TH, PHA, etc. and for DNA for future parent verification in the case of E.T. it was done in a couple of weeks.  If I were to turn in samples for 30 replacement heifers, the time frame for completion might have been different.  So, if they which to check it can be done quite easily.

Another thing, when an animal (of any meat species) wins and qualifies for the sale at the State Fair of Texas, it is branded with a STF  brand almost immediately.  If winning steers from other shows were branded immediately with a unique brand (hot or freeze) it would be pretty clear of where the animal was shown and when.

I hate that this there is a question.  It's not good for those who have spent the money and worked hard to get there.  As someone said earlier, with social media and our quick judgements about what we read, hear and say can affect things in a negative way as well.  We're all innocent until proven guilty.  One could easily start something, make accusations and hurt someone and their reputation without proof.  No one remembers someone being cleared or found to be within the regulations.  They only remember the negative.  We like to see others fall.

We keep breeding them, buying and selling them, feeding them, trying to get them to peak at the right time, working hard with their hair, their handling, hoping for that slap.  Unfortunately, we are not all playing on a level playing field.  This, you'll never change.  A winner is one who does the best job they can with what they've got, can be proud of what they've done and maybe learned a little something along the way.  And some purple and green would be nice.

NAILE use to put an NA brand on the jaw of the steers after weigh in and teeth were checked.

This didn't even stop the swapping of steers with in the grounds of NAILE as several jocks had their own NA brands out in the tieouts and would just swap out the steer they checked in that met requirements with another steer that they wanted to show but couldn't pass the teeth check.

Have also heard stories of the EX brand being spray painted on cattle to give the judge the impression the animal was from the EX ranch.
