Our basic ration is a 15% protein, coarse blended feed that runs about 18% fiber & 3% fat. It contains a corn gluten pellet, cottonseed hulls and bean meal along with other ingredients. The protein is for muscle development & skeletal growth...the fat is for energy (growth & condition), and the fiber will help with digestion as well as keeping the feed from being too "hot". This feed is safe in creep feeders for calves & it works to hand feed growing cattle as well as cattle we may be developing for sale, etc. For show cattle, I hand mix oats & beet pulp and add to the ration, the quantities depending on what I need to do...add conditioning, clean one up, add fill, etc. I'm sure there are more sophisticated show rations available...this works for us because it's versatile enough & it can be customized or tweaked if/when needed, whether we have the feed mill do that (adding some fat, for example) or we do it at home by adding other ingredients for special circumstances, like oats & beet pulp.
