I just had a heifer calve a couple days ago and she wont let her calf nurse. :-\ Its not that she wont let the calf nurse at all because she dose let it nurse, but only on one quarter. My thought on the situation is that her udder is so swollen  that it hurts. She doesn't even like her udder touched at all. What should I do ??? Should I just hobble her and let the calf nurse without the worry of being kicked or should I try to milk her a little to take the swelling down. I know that this is probably a common occurrence with heifers but this is the first time I have ever had one act like this.

If it were me you could do one of two things. One nothing and let the calf get more aggrisive and hungry and I am sure he would get on the other teats. Or seperate them for about four hours and then put the cow in the chute and let and help the calf get on all of them. Good luck.

If the calf has not nursed three of her quarters, you might need to milk her out, especially if it has been several days.  The cow could get mastitis.  If you can milk her, save the milk to bottle feed the calf.  Just make sure there is no blood or cheese like lumps in the milk.  She may not like you touching her at first, but if you can put some warm water on her udders and work gently, you may be able to get it done. Good luck!

Thank you very much frostback and cowcrazy! (clapping) Both cow and calf are doing great now. It took a couple of days to get the cow to allow the calf to nurse. I just left her and the calf alone in a pen in our barn and that seemed to help.
