I have this heifer I have had for a few months and never caught her in heat. we decided to give her a shot of estrumate Saturday(20th). I've noticed discharge for two days now. today she came in heat( at least I think she did) around 4:30 she was mounting other cows and they were mounting her. she  stood a couple times so I decided to watch her a little more. she never done anything after that. we decided to go ahead and AI her. when I waked her to the barn from the field I noticed bloody discharge, like a lot. We continued trying to AI. my 4-h leader couldn't find her cervix. he's been AI'ING  for a long time and this is the first time he hasn't been able to find it. he was concerned about the blood as well. He preg. checked her about a week ago and couldn't find a calf but he found her cervix. we think she may be aborting? has anyone ever experienced blood like this or think they know what's going on? I'm concerned.  Thanks for reading.

I'm not as concerned about the bleeding, more concerned he couldn't find a cervix. How could she be bred if he didn't find the cervix? Get a professional in there to palpate the tract and see whats going on. The only other thing is when you say "a lot" it illicit images of hemorrhaging. If she wasn't prolapsing or if large pools of blood weren't coming out that would be my top concern. Call a vet that has been doing this a long time, there is no way anyone over the internet could tell you what is wrong.

ok thanks! No pools of blood and she isn't prolapsing. I think I'm going to have a vet check her and make sure she even has all her parts.

If she is heavy bred, the cervix will be pulled over the pelvic bone and therefore very hard to get ahold of sometimes. You need to get a vet involved.

UPDATE:  she aborted a calf early this morning. It was about the size or a rabbit and I could tell it was a bull

You'll want to get her in and possibly infuse her uterus with a round of antibiotics and possibly retreat her in a few days to get her back ready to breed as quickly as you can. It takes quite a bit of time to heal up after an abortion of a calf that is that far along.

After many years,  ;) I've come to the realization that the most common reason for a well-grown heifer NOT coming into heat ...is...she's already bred.  As you've also discovered, now.

We had one abort last week, she was 177 days bred with an embryo calf, a bull with a white face about the size of a small dog (like a chihuahua)  :( She is coming into heat tonight, 7 days later. Vet said that was normal, and no need for antibiotics unless she showed signs of infection.
We sent tissue samples off of the fetus and placenta to see what happened.

Sorry but a shot of estrumate will always cause a animal to abort.  Give her a shot of estrumate 10 days after the first shot then repeat 10 days later, then breed and give factral  at breeding, she should be all good  :)

It will make a huge difference as to how fast she'll rebreed whether or not she went ahead and cleaned normally after the abortion which there is a larger percentage of cows that do not clean after a short or midterm abortion. I guess really it is what it is and you'll have to decide what you need to do to get her rebred in a timely matter.
Lute will not always cause an abortion. It depends on how far along the pregnancy is as to whether or not it will terminate the pregnancy.

thanks for all the comments. we didn't know she was pregnant(she obviously got bred before I got her cause we don't have a bull) that's why we used the estrumate! She's doing well, going to give her a shot of penicillin just to be safe. she hasn't cleaned up all the way yet. we gave her a shot of lute on Friday. she has a long strand of the placenta or the umbilical cord hanging out. not sure which cause this is my first time with one that has aborted. it feels rubbery if that tells you anything. should I be concerned about this? its came out more over the past couple of days. I think it should come out by itself soon but I'm not for sure. Thanks!
